"What if there was a way for a business to transform any conduct it disliked into a felony, harnessing the power of the state to threaten anyone who acted in a way that displeased the company with a long prison sentence and six-figure fines?
Surprise! That actually exists! It's called Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the "#anticircumvention" clause, which establishes five-year sentences and $500k fines for anyone who bypasses an "effective access control" for a copyrighted work."
Let Cory (@pluralistic) explain it. He's good at explaining #enshittification, or as the rest of us call it, the 21st goddamn century.
As an aside, there should be a branch of the Judicial tree that is staffed by people who understand technology and the implications therein. (Just sayin, as someone who had thousands of pages of material stolen "fairly" for LLM.) These courts don't understand what they're ruling on.

They finally did it. Microsoft has successfully over-engineered a text editor into a threat vector.
This CVE is an 8.8 severity RCE in Notepad of all things lmao.
Apparently, the "innovation" of adding markdown support came with the ability of launching unverified protocols that load and execute remote files.
We have reached a point where the simple act of opening a .md file in a native utility can compromise your system. Is nothing safe anymore? 😭

Very much looking forward to reading it, @pluralistic !

il y a plus de 10 ans de ça, Cory Doctorow aka @pluralistic (déjà lui !) ne disait pas autre chose, à propos de la censure du web, dans une nouvelle pour le MIT tech review.

> When I think about the debate over radium, I imagine that the people who understood that radium was really bad for you must have run up against critics who told them they were being unreasonable. But you can't just tell people, 'stop putting radium up your asshole.' They won't take you seriously.

FTA: "As Canada contemplates our response to the collapse of the American empire and its alliances with the world, the cornerstone of our current strategy is sacrificing our dollars, water and energy in order to become more dependent on America, in a weird and improbable bet that we will figure out how to make millions of Canadians unemployed. I'm sorry, that just doesn't sound like a great idea to me."
Excellent article by Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic) about the state of "AI", how we got here, and how to be an effective "AI" critic.

AI companies will fail. We can salvage something from the wreckage
AI is asbestos in the walls of our tech society, stuffed there by monopolists run amok. A serious fight against it must strike at its rootsCory Doctorow (The Guardian)
"An 8K video is 10 times heavier and more polluting than an HD video. On your smartphone, you literally can't even see the difference. It's pointless waste."

I remember reading and commenting on the essay where you first used the term #enshittification, on @medium back in November 2022. I doubt you or anyone else realized then how much it would catch on 🙂

Also, happy to see another @thunderbird user. Sadly, Mozilla is becoming enshittified as well.
I am fascinated by this new strategy where multiple AI company CEOs have been going on tears tours this year so far complaining about how anti AI sentiment has hurt their businesses 😭

I’m not a Wikipedia editor/contributor (I’m not knowledgeable enough for the most part), but if I were one, and I didn’t want my work to be sold to train AI so Wikimedia Foundation can make even more money off of it (they actually started selling it to Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral, and Perplexity LAST YEAR without telling us! Surprise!), this may be a good time for me to WITHHOLD FURTHER LABOR and stop contributing to Wikipedia until they reverse this decision.

I noticed that more Gmail spam is getting through, but most are still being flagged. I think their spam classification is only partially driven by Gemini #AI
If they were concerned about spam, they would allow granular application of Smart Features, but we're the product.
It appears that turning off the new “Smart Features” in #GMail that “provide smart features and personalize your experience” also turns off a decades-old feature that categorizes spam away from your Inbox.
Smart Features uses Gemini #AI to enable LLM-assisted email composition and summary, and to suggest stuff from your calendars and promotional items.
In other words, disabling GMail’s AI features requires you to give up a categorization feature that you’ve had for decades, long before “AI” as we know it today was even a thing.
