A small pod with holes and filled with seeds occupies the center of the flower, vaguely reminiscent of the perforated center of a lotus blossom. On my way to Tucson, I ran into these guys changing a clutch while moving two Carnegiea gigantea (saguaro) cacti. The cacti were on their way to Palm Springs. Because of the need for more stripmalls & parking lots, there are lots of cacti that need to be moved. Of note, saguaros are protected, but asshats like to shoot them.
