There's a patch of sidewalk that the city refuses to maintain, so there's been Japanese knotweed expanding for years.

For the last two years I have pulled every shoot when I walk by.

Goldenrod took over a small area after a friend planted some. Last year I spread tend of thousands of their seeds to winterize.

I seem to have won? Goldenrod plus weeding actually beat the worst invasive species around here!!! Without Roundup! Now it's a bee buffet!

Cat hair as garden pest control: a Case Study
I scattered a big bag of cat hair between the vegetable rows, and went about other business. Couple of hours later, I returned and found a bulldog named Mikey sitting in the middle of the garden with a “where is she?” look on his face.
Subsequent researches into organic methods of bulldog control were unfruitful. #gardening

1. My annual planting of the veggies and herbs in our raised garden beds was done in the rain. It was a very pleasant experience. (photos attached)

2. My knitting group met at a friend's back patio and I made some progress on the right sleeve of my purple cardigan, without messing up while engaged in conversation. A first!

We bought a Persian Shield yesterday, among some other plants.


It will be planted in a tall pot with a sweet potato vine that has lime green leaves, and a dahlia.
This plant is a Persian Shield (Strobilanthes dyerianus), recognizable by its iridescent purple leaves featuring deep green veining.

On a black BG, a single stem with two buds and one opening flower. Some stray sunlight on the backdrop. The open flower is bright shining gold on the inside with a blush of dull rose on outside of the outer petals. The petals are long and narrow compared to the rounded tulips we're used to. They open wide, with a bit of a recurve. Stamens and pistil green and golden yellow.

This little one spent most of the morning following me around as I tidied up my garden, and pouncing on all the little creatures I accidently disturbed. Given the number of worms and other creepy-crawlies it consumed, I'm amazed it could still get airborne by the time I'd finished!
