Our first street garden. This is a rectangle garden plot sticking out in the street surrounded by bitumen road on 3 sides and a bitumen footpath on the other. In the middle of the garden plot is a small tree trunk. The garden plot is bordered by cut 'bluestone' blocks of basalt. This plot gets extremely hot in the summer. The front of this garden faces west. I am experimenting with the fairly bare patch on the front left. This gets the hottest in summer and is also stepped on by drivers who have parked their cars. This photo shows that over the autumn and winter, the silver leafed gazania I planted there recently have now established themselves. There are a lot of gazanias around the borders of the rest of the plot. They seem to cope with the heat in summer along the edge, so I hope that they will also cope in the front left of the photo. This will then reduce the heat on the rest of the garden. I have some succulents in the front right of the photo which I am using to provide shelter for some other plants while they establish themselves. I should plant them in the front left again - the last succulent plantings there got destroyed by people treading on them, but persistence is what is required. The overall garden design is silver leafed gazanias for the borders. Succulents that are about 30cm and geraniums for the rest of the garden. Nasturtiums grow, but get killed off by the summer heat.

This afternoon's weather forecast is pretty grim and foreboding with talk of "severe" storms. The corn is SO close to being ready that I added some more rope supports to help keep it upright. Fingers crossed. Best laid plans and all... BTW look at the way the butternut squash has taken over the whole area.

I am always happy when I see this on my wisteria. This is the handiwork of leaf cutter bees. You can tell by the nearly perfect circular cutouts they make. I've only seen them actually cutting circles once. You can hear their jaws working like tiny little scissors. It's the funniest thing.

I'm really enjoying the high purpleness in the garden, with oodles of Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) and abundant second flowering of Wisteria, complimented by the deep pinkiness of Veronicastrum virginicum 'Fascination'. In there somewhere is also self-seeded Purple Toadflax. All a magnet for pollinators. I'm relishing them while I can, as they may not last in this heatwave.

P.S. This is a tiny garden, so plants like this have a real impact.

Every year, my Echinacea purpurea put forth dozens of blooms. Almost as fast as they form, something starts methodically removing the florets, leaving each flowerhead a ragged mess. I've never actually seen what is doing it or if it is being done by multiple visitors. The bees seem not to mind anyway.

Damp red sandstone mottled with black, sprinkled with young feathery candleflame lichens.
A bit of rotting lumber with what I think is staghorn's fungus rising up like skeletal fingers.
iNaturalist tells me this is Xylodon flaviporus growing on my porch, but all I can see is what looks like a little bleached corral reef covered in algae.
I like to take regular photos of the golden fan shaped jelly fungus growing in the cracks of the green paint on my old bench. I only get to see it after a few days of rain, it always looks so pretty.
