The Northeast and Midwest are enduring what is, in some places, the worst outbreak of spongy moths on record. One of the factors driving the proliferation of very hungry caterpillars is climate change-spurred drought, which allows spongy moths to breed with abandon, producing up to a million caterpillars per acre. Trees are resilient, but this outbreak has been especially long and damaging

Ozark chinkapin, Castanea ozarkensis, is a chestnut tree endemic to the Ozark region. The early 20th century chestnut blight decimated its populations like American chestnut.
This shows the species in bloom and it smells incredible! It has a tremendous amount of attention from various insects and bugs. I've counted five bee species, two ant species, two beetle species, flies, wasps, etc. I'm seeing in very small part, its former ecological role as a dominant species.
