If we ever find this squiggly line, it will be one of the greatest discoveries in the history of exploration. It's the spectral signal of a habitable, truly Earthlike planet.

Spotting it won't be easy, but the JWST observatory is looking now.

Summer solstice 2024

image

Image/Photo Video: 00:00:10

Summer officially begins in the Northern Hemisphere today 20 June, marking the longest day of the year. The summer solstice, which is when the Sun reaches the most northerly point in the sky, is set to occur tonight at 21:50 BST/22:50 CEST.

During the summer solstice, the Northern Hemisphere will experience the longest period of sunlight in a day or the longest day of the year. This is because of Earth’s position in orbit around the Sun and the way the North Pole is tilted towards the Sun during the solstice.

The Sun’s rays hit the Northern Hemisphere at their most direct angle, resulting in the most extended period of daylight. Despite the long hours of daylight, it may not necessarily be the hottest day of the year.

This animation shows one image per day captured by the Meteosat Second Generation from 20 June 2023 until 19 June 2024 captured at approximately 16:30 BST/17:30 CEST.

https://www.livescience.com/space/astronomy/james-webb-telescope-reveals-long-studied-baby-star-is-actually-twins-and-theyre-throwing-identical-tantrums

A distant star first spotted decades ago is actually a pair of baby stars that are each spewing powerful energy jets parallel to one another, scientists have discovered.

The unlikely twins were finally identified thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which peered through a dense cloud of cosmic dust to spy the adjacent jets shooting out of the juvenile stars, researchers said.

The best spots on the Moon for lunar bases are the same spots where scientists want to build telescopes…

And the rush to build bases on the Moon could interfere with the very conditions that make the Moon attractive for research in the first place.

✨ My Pillars of Creation ✨

The pillars of creation in the Eagle Nebula - Messier 16.

What a difference a well behaved mount makes. Able to track and guide properly means being able to do long exposures and not smear the light of the target all over the camera sensor. A bit of collimation remains to be done, but this isn't an awful result for four hours of hydrogen alpha light.

The world lost a giant on 6/9 when Edward C. Stone passed away. Stone was the Voyager Project Scientist from 1972-2022 & JPL Director from 1991-2001. The Voyager 1 & 2 spacecraft, launched in 1977 & after exploring the outer planets, both still send data back to our little world from interstellar space. Voyager 1 is 15,147,896,591mi from Earth & Voyager 2 is 12,650,479,389mi from Earth. One-way light time for Voyager 1 is 22:35:16 & for Voyager 2 18:51:50. https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/ed-stone-former-director-of-jpl-and-voyager-project-scientist-dies

Megaconstellations like Starlink will increase atmospheric aluminum oxide amounts to 646% over natural levels ( +360 metric tons / year ).

It will take up to 30 years for the aluminum oxides to drift down to stratospheric altitudes, where 90% of Earth's ozone is located.

Once there aluminum oxide will act as a catalyst with chlorine harming the ozone layer.

If you haven't already, definitely worth checking out this epic thread spanning several months starting with debris from space landing on a farm, and (so far) ending with SpaceX people turning up and refusing to answer questions:

I am talking o a reporter about this in a couple hours: https://regina.ctvnews.ca/from-outer-space-sask-farmers-baffled-after-discovering-strange-wreckage-in-field-1.6880353

This is about an hour away from my farm, so this'll be a fun conversation, and yet another great opportunity to tell a lot of people about what a huge problem we have with unregulated commercialization of orbit. (Also I just redid my slides for my public talk next week, this is going in!)

I'm sad to report the death of Ed Stone, the NASA scientist who was the heart & soul of the Voyager program. Spending time with him for my Discover magazine profile was a highlight of my career.

I did my best to capture the experience:

“The universe is expanding, and faster now than it did in the past. Scientists don't know why, but the leading explanation is that the universe contains something that has a repulsive gravitational effect - it pushes the universe apart instead of pulling it back together. This phenomenon is called dark energy.”

Hey Star Trek fans, did you know that there was a real life spaceship called the Enterprise? (Well, sort of spaceship...)

It was the very first prototype of the space shuttle, you can see its 1976 public unveiling here:

https://fedi.video/w/nwydYGKUpKZgD7NWjrmLMG

The original plan was to convert the Enterprise prototype into a full space-going shuttle, but unfortunately design changes meant it was easier to build a new shuttle from scratch.

You can still see the Enterprise at a museum in New York.

Astronomers used to pack up their telescopes when the sun came up, but researchers at Macquarie University have developed a new technique for observing celestial objects during the day.

The Huntsman Telescope could allow around-the-clock visual monitoring of satellites, which would significantly improve safety on Earth and in space.

OKAY EVERYONE, we are about an hour from launch of Boeing Starliner CFT. Everything is going well so far, weather is 90% go.

If you recall, the last launch on June 1 was scrubbed at T-3:50 because of a ground systems issue
