I'd engage with you in a debate,
but you're too busy
finding different ways
to disarm me.

As problematic as it can be, I like it when a sci-fi/fantasy world has races with characteristics that are more feckless and derpy than others. The universe shouldn't be composed only of warrior classes; it needs it's Hobbits, Podlings, or Ewoks.

Of the 58,000+ books published per year:

- 90% will sell less than 2,000 copies
- 50% will sell LESS THAN A DOZEN COPIES

Great, very readable piece on book publishing and how it's very much like being a VC...

I'm never sure I've done the steps right to release a new title until I spot it lurking in the online wild with all the other books, you know?

My new audiobook (a sweet SF romance w/chosen-family vibes) finally went live on its first site today.

Yay, Libro.fm! There's a pre-order button & everything!

There are 30+ other vendors to go, but it's up on one, so I can say confidently that it's REAL!

So happy right now.

I have a new short story called โ€˜An Inheritance of Ghostsโ€™ in the forthcoming volume of the Los Angeles Press.

This one is based firmly in the real world! You can pre-order a copy here:

April 12: The entire team of lexicographers at Dictionary.com gets laid off.

WRITERS:
I've worked as an editor for some years now, both in traditional publishing and freelance. There are five questions to ask if you are worried about getting scammed in the publishing industry.

Let's say you have an offer from a publisher, who says they want to publish your book...

1) Are they asking for money? Then it's definitely a scam.

2) Are they contacting you before reading your manuscript? Then it's definitely a scam.

3) Do they want you to sign a contract before they have read any of your manuscript? Then it's definitely a scam.

4) Have they approached you out of the blue on social media, and messaged you in your DMs? Then it's definitely a scam.

But mostly...

5) Does it feel like a scam? Then it's definitely a scam.

Big news in the world of editing: On May 29, the Associated Press Stylebook is switching to Merriam-Webster as its primary dictionary, after using Webster's New World College Dictionary for decades.

Even though Iโ€™m no longer working as a writer or editor, I maintain my online subscription; I still find it useful even in more casual writing.

Greetings from the Runestone Grove! I'm the River Willow Druid, or RD if you prefer. I run storytelling circles on Twitch where I tell the best short stories and poetry I can find!

If you're a writer/poet then I invite you to submit your work for me to tell live on stream. If you're a musician or fellow storyteller then I may welcome you to the stream to perform! My hope is to foster a community of artists and entertainers, giving them a stage to shine!

One of the weird things I find with writing Fantasy is that it takes sooooooo long to get anywhere. This is a series of maps showing the time it used to take to travel across America from New York. Days to get anywhere, even with installed roads, in 1800, then down to weeks to reach Chicago.

How would this affect the way you draw your maps?
