#PanamaCanal #RonaldReagan #TrumpCoup
I guess, I was too young, but yes, #Reagan did talk a lot about the canal.
However, it was a pipedream even back then in 1977:
"It is possible that the canal could be defended against a hostile Panamanian population, backed by guerrillas from other Latin American countries, but the Joint Chiefs of Staff say it would take over 100,000 men, ..."
Same, I just thought, it'd take him more weeks...
I did not see the reclaiming of the #PanamaCanal, #Canada as the 51st US state (;)), and the #GreenlandPurchase (or else) coming, though, I have to admit.
Next-level insanity.
#trump non starters
Acquisition of #panamaCanal
Acquisition of #Greenland
Acquisition of #Canada
Cancelation of birthright citizenship
Shutting down #fema
We're only in the second week, if he keeps this up he's going to seriously lose credibility around the world, making him a severe security threat
#Trump also hails President McKinley, who got the #PanamaCanal going & fought the Spanish-American war. Trump is making it clear that he wants control of the canal back, & falsely claims that “#China is operating the Panama Canal.” He ends by saying “we’re taking it back.”
#FactCheck #TrumpLies - #Panama operates the Panama Canal, though the ownership of ports at either side of the canal by a Hong Kong-based company has raised some security concerns.
#Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino said the #PanamaCanal “is & will continue” to belong to Panama.
His remarks respond to what #Trump said about the canal during his #inauguration speech.
The Panama Canal “has foolishly been given to the country of Panama after the United States — the United States, I mean, think of this, spent more money than ever spent on a project before & lost 38,000 lives in the building of the Panama Canal,” Trump said. “We gave it to Panama, & we’re taking it back.”
President Mulino responded in a Spanish-language statement saying, “I must reject in its entirety the words expressed by President Donald #Trump regarding #Panama & its Canal.”
“The Canal is & will continue to be Panama’s & its administration will continue to be under Panamanian control with respect to its permanent neutrality,” the statement reads.

In his speech, #Trump also suggested that “#China is operating the #PanamaCanal.”
Mulino rejected that, saying, “There is no presence of any nation in the world that interferes with our administration.”
Mulino also responded to #Trump’s assertion that the canal was given to #Panama.
“The Canal was not a concession from anyone. It was the result of generational struggles that culminated in 1999, as a result of the Torrijos-Carter treaty &, since then until now, for 25 years, without interruption, we have managed & expanded it responsibly to serve the world & its commerce, including the United States,” Mulino said in his statement.
"Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has unveiled plans for a 445-kilometre interoceanic waterway that would provide an alternative to the congested Panama Canal...
"The United States had considered building a Nicaraguan canal as far back as 1854."
