it's incredibly disrespectful towards the 3000 people who died on 9/11 to be compared with a democratic election where the candidate you dislike won and I request that you delete this post.
in reply to kaia

@kaia @HistoPol trumps first presidency killed a lot more than 3,000. A four year delay to climate action will probably kill around a hundred million worldwide.

@theothersimo

This is true.
Furthermore, Trump's lack of scientific administration during his first term with regard to covid lead to almost 200 k unecessarily dead:

Via #BusinessInsider

"Damning analysis of Trump's pandemic response suggested 40% of US COVID-19 deaths could have been avoided"

"The US has recorded about 27 million COVID-19 cases and at least 471,000 deaths, though public-health experts have said those official tallies are likely undercounted."

There is no disrespect intended and, as I have been writing for months, this election will be a great deal worse than 9/11. (And I write this completely aware how devastating it was for the US, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries.)

This is true not only for the US, but also for the globe, politically, militarily, and climatologically.

Probably the first to feel the consequences will be the brave #Ukrainian people....

The next people to feel his wrath are on a pre-compiled black list by an absolute pro:

...and then, there will be the thousands of pregnant women that have medical difficulties, when a #NationalAbortionBan is enacted:

Exclusive analysis finds the rate of maternal deaths in Texas increased 56% from 2019 to 2022, compared with just 11% nationwide during the same time period."

The list, in fact, is so long, it is hard to decide where to start.

Gender-afirming care in particular and the LGBTQIA+community, who has been on the run, when financially feasible, from Red States for some years now will be another focus point of the 2nd Trump presidency.

Well, and to get back to @theothersimo's point, the #climatecrisis

virtue signalling is when you do something to get confirmation from your ingroup. like comparing Trumps presidency to the holocaust as I've seen in other threads. and people are boosting this.

I'm here disturbing your ingroup, causing you to insult me. but I think that's okay.

@HistoPol #Project2025 is scary. Hopefully there are enough guard rails to get us through the next four years or maybe less. Vance will be worse because he’s in Peter’s Thiel’s pocket and actually Peter Thiel and Leonard Leo are going to be running a shadow presidency with Trump and Vance.

I'll tell you why I don't think anything (and def not the judicial) can save us:
1) he has immunity. All powerful
2) he will change the very system that he deems has failed him in order to never have to run and be beat again. So if anyone thinks we're voting anything out in 28, I'd rethink that idea.
3) we don't even have Congress. I'm making stuff up but he could totally make a 'new rule' that Senators and Reps also can stay as long as they want (why not)?

4) he'll want to keep it this way because it's an ideal 'kangaroo government' which will give the illusion of having choices or options.

5) All this will happen while internment camps flourish, political opponents are jailed for looking at him wrong

6) meanwhile the only measure of the economy, Wall Street will do great and billionaires will laugh all the way to the bank.

7) the US will not have any foreign policies other than that of Putin. He will take Ukraine, Georgia and maybe even the Baltic States and 'recreate the USSR' and the BRICS will make an alliance that Europe will have a hard time fighting.

That's what they've done.

I'm still in shock. My worst scenario came true--only even worse.

You're right, though.

On the "bright side," Trump might not live to see the end if his term.
On the dark side, Vance, who'd never have ein even a (somewhat) rigged election, would become president. Much younger and much brighter (the latter being easy to accomplish,) completely bought and sold, it seems.

The horrors just never end these days.

@Beachbum

Probably not.
My inner apocalyptic scenarios, in particular about the climate crisis, but also about the fascist mass deportation and the pregnant-women travel bans, a well as period-watching devices and apps to come (-》 Handmaid's Tale,) that I have been having for months are hard to beat. πŸ€ͺ πŸ”«.

@Beachbum @HistoPol Either the current gov does everything imaginable about that scenario which is 100% precise, or the orbanization of the US is inevitable. No checks, no balances, no correct data, no free media (hell, there wasn't any since its all bilionaire's times, -post and -news) , no independent judicial system, no resistance. The result of this is much worse than the first 4 years of Trump.
in reply to a1

@Beachbum @HistoPol In my mind, there is no doubt the agglomeration of votes has been manipulated (not the voting machines). Indicators: 1) implausible split votes, 2) missing votes (some say up to 22 Mio) - high turnout but less votes 3) massive voter intimidation/purges.

I don't get it Kamala has given in. I hope Biden/Harris are taking decicive action quick.

Otherwise the US dream is over. Forever.

Very true.

I think @VeroniqueB99 relates to the feeling people had were old enough on 9/11 to comprehend what was happening and the fear and helplessness that (initially at least) too a hold of people.

Excellent point James: the US of 9/11/21 and of 11/6/24 could hardly be more different (apart from the Civil war period).
