The two most important fundamentals of computer programming are, arguably, consistency and encapsulation.
Consistency lets you write something once and know it will work the same way indefinitely. This is a huge force multiplier and the main way computers have transformed society.
Encapsulation lets you decompose a complex system into predictable, independent pieces, allowing reuse and more complex programs.
Chat-prompt "programming" breaks both.
I've just caught up on the latest 'Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000' with @emilymbender and @alex, and special guest Naomi Klein -
- and holy hell, it's depressing as anything, but it's a must-watch.
Key take-away: the worst people in the world have control over the most lethal and destructive weapons in the world, and plan to make decisions on their use aided by the glitchiest tech in the world (and no nuclear treaties are in force).

AI models might be drawn to ‘spiritual bliss’. Then again, they might just talk like hippies
AI developers are starting to talk about ‘welfare’ and ‘spirituality’, raising old questions about the inner lives of machines. The Conversation
Why are we kidding ourselves? Or am I missing some key information about how great 'AI' is in L&T at university? How is this 'the future'? What is it about smart sounding chatbots (even if they were accurate and reliable) that is so good it replaces human skill, effort and knowledge? How have bigtech AI companies fooled academics so easily?
A surge in new datacenters, each with the power demand of 100,000 households and a cooling water demand of 1,000,000 m³ per year to train AI models on material obtained without consent on hardware now unaffordable to consumers so fascism-adjacent tech billionaires can sell us the idea that any skill is now worthless and in doing so creating the largest economic bubble ever while simultaneously destroying society and environment.
I think that about sums it up.

Helping AI agents search to get the best results out of large language models
The EnCompass system runs AI agent programs by backtracking and making several attempts, finding an LLM’s best set of outputs. It lets programmers easily experiment with different search strategies so they can work with AI agents more efficiently.MIT News | Massachusetts Institute of Technology
There is no such thing as ethical AI. There's no right way to do the wrong thing, don't compromise on the pollution of the information sphere and denigration of art and culture and proliferation of consciousness-impersonating political agents
AI slop hurts your soul.
It makes you: distrustful, dismissive of creative works, uncreative, derivative, imaginatively stunted, unreflective, dependant, it robs you of the satisfaction and growth granted by the creative process and it poisons you with all the same cultural biases taken from the training data.
AI robs people of imagination and the drive to create and instead produces output that is pastiche on steroid, uninspired unchallenging slop, every little detail crafted without personality or opinion with nothing to say except "this might vaguely remind you of something good that already existed"
I am also particularly concerned about the rise of chatbots pretending to be humans for political purposes.

Not sure how many of you use ChatGTP, but you might want to scale back.
"The latest model of ChatGPT has begun to cite Elon Musk’s Grokipedia as a source on a wide range of queries, including on Iranian conglomerates and Holocaust deniers, raising concerns about misinformation on the platform.
In tests done by the Guardian, GPT-5.2 cited Grokipedia nine times in response to more than a dozen different questions."

🪤 When two years of academic work vanished with a single click // Nature
「 I temporarily disabled the ‘data consent’ option because I wanted to see whether I would still have access to all of the model’s functions if I did not provide OpenAI with my data. At that moment, all of my chats were permanently deleted and the project folders were emptied — two years of carefully structured academic work disappeared. No warning appeared 」
