Uglies (2024)

The 2010s called and they’d like their movie back. This movie just feels like a bad relic from the past. Without movies like Uglies, there would be no foil for much better films.

Everything is so bland. The acting is stilted, the CGI is pretty low rent. the action is boring and the world building lacking.

The filmmakers don’t see the irony of casting beautiful actors to portray ugly people whos only desire is to get surgery to be pretty.

I’m the future they have the Captain America Super Soldier program too. They are creating the most beautiful dumb soldiers.

Joey King can’t play teens anymore.

Oh dear goodness, the ending leaves this open for a full franchise of movies.

Rated 1 out of 10.

Streamed on Netflix.

Tonight’s movie is Uglies (2024) on #Netflix. This was a random pick. I’m 30 minutes into this one hour and 40 minute movie and I’m already regretting starting the stream.

Last night I watched...

Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024)

Detective Mike and Marcus are at it again. In this one, Marcus dies, sees his former boss who previously died, then comes back to life, talking about souls, and how he cannot die. This happens within the first 10 minutes. Meanwhile, their former boss is framed and everyone goes along with it, except Mike and Marcus who set out to prove otherwise.

The story is nonsensical. It's a check your brains at the door type of movie, with over the top action pieces between a story that defies logic and comedy that feels somewhat forced. Eating candy after a heart attack, during a shoot out? Drones dropping bombs? Action sequences that look like a video game? To me it wore thin before reaching the end.

Directed by Adil & Bilall

Stars Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Núñez, Eric Dane, Ioan Gruffudd, Jacob Scipio, Melanie Liburd, Tasha Smith, Tiffany Haddish, and Joe Pantoliano

Marshall Motors is my favorite track from Nathan Furst's Need for Speed score.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qluVehtZljM

It reminds me of Danny Elfman's track Finale from his score for The Kingdom.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEh43NnR4UY

I also like the track Switching Seats which has hints of Wall-E.

This afternoon's movie is Need for Speed (2014). Not the greatest script or plot, but still a fun movie to (re)watch because of the cars and well shot racing scenes.

Also, there's a laundry list of actors in this one: Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Kid Audi, Rami Malek (before he decided to stop making fun movies), Dakota Johnson and Michael Keaton.

It also helps that the beautiful score by Nathan Furst is way more than this film deserves.

A strange week of movie watching for #LetterboxdFriday .

This year, I plan to actually aim for horror movies during the season, mostly ones I own. I even put together a list to track it: https://boxd.it/yrZdm

Which showed me I have so many to watch, amongst other self-imposed obligations, that I'm starting now. XD So the next two Nightmare films will end my evening.

Of course, #NHFF being in the middle of the month will slow me down, but whatever.

Thomas Jane’s big screen interpretation of the Punisher character is the defining one.

The Holy Trinity of Nicolas Cage films: Face/Off, Con Air and The Rock.

Did we really need an extended boat chase scene in Face/Off? Nope. Is it awesome that it’s there? Hell yea.

“Lies, distrust, mixed messages. This is turning into a real marriage.” -Castor Troy

#movies #JohnWoo #FaceOff

I’ve seen Face/Off countless times and never until now realized this prisoner is Thomas Jane!

#movies #JohnWoo #FaceOff

The image quality is so sharp and crisp that The use of stunt doubles for Nic Cage and John Travolta are even more apparent in Face/Off when watched in 4K.

This is most especially in the case of Nic Cage, whose stunt double didn’t even bother to cut his hair to match Nic Cage’s.

This all adds to how bonkers this movie is.

#movies #JohnWoo #FaceOff

Tonight's movie is the most bonkers action film ever made: John Woo's 1997 film Face/Off. I love this movie -- and now it's even better on 4K UHD Blu-ray. Nothing beats an unhinged Nicolas Cage and that's what we get in this movie.

I borrowed Civil War and Furious from the local library on DVD. Tonight's movie is going to be Civil War. Also, libraries are awesome, support your local library.

So, here is a graph showing my stress.

The two hours from before noon to noon is when I was watching Alien: Romulus. That’s probably a good indicator of how scary the film was.

Let it be known, I am a scaredy cat when it comes to horror films and that’s why I don’t normally watch them.

I’ll write more about my feelings for the movie when I get home.

The Living Daylights (1987)

The Living Daylights was enjoyable enough. I was not a fan of Maryam d'Abo’s performance as a memorable Bond girl. Nor were the baddies very memorable.

I did like that the movie was not focused on villains determined on getting world domination. Art Malik was excellent as Kamran Shah.

It goes without saying that Timothy Dalton was awesome as James Bond and I wish he had done a few more Bond films.

John Barry’s score for the film was most excellent.

Rated 6 out of 10.

Watched on Blu-ray.
