Favorite vs. Missed Plugins on Linux (Part 1: Instruments)

Our Ubuntu Studio + Ardour + OBS Setup for our band's live streams. All open source. Love that we don't need proprietary software to play shows from our studio. 😀

Of course @amadeus has already reached out to Mike from ACMT and made a really great interview for @linuxaudiodevelopment

You can find that review here: linuxaudio.dev/linux-audio-dev…

2) ACMT or Applied Computer Music Technologies, which is making Linux-first plugins, to help create plugin choices for pros using Linux for audio production.

ACMT is "pro-audio DSP software solutions, virtual hardware emulations, and innovative audio processing" but "without requiring processor intensive upsampling - reducing CPU load and allowing for more plug-ins in a typical session"

Producing on a refurbed Lenovo, I really like that!

So now I'm making a list of CPU-effective plugins, which doesn't cause additional latency. These will be my template arsenal, and make a template wich can take care of basic mix things on the fly, so I can keep some of my "always mixing" approach, and then - if I even need it - can be switched out later with different plug-ins.

This has really made appreciate the work of two different Linux Native plugin creators, which plugins runs with so little effort, you an use a lot!

#Linuxaudio

One thing in Bitwig i didn't know I needed, was the simple showing of plugin-caused delay on each track.

I have always mixed on the fly; I like to record, put on effects and mix the result so I get an impression of how it will sound.

This approach has always caused delay (also on MacOS) and made live recording a pain later (which means consolidating and freezing tracks).

Now I can see if I can put on a plug-in or if I should wait because of latency.

@linuxaudiodevelopment @amadeus
#LinuxAudio folk, I have just stumbled on to the #AirwindowsConsolidated plugins (I am familiar with these from #VCVRack) and they are well worth checking out.

I've posted this to linuxdaw.org/

So what are we even looking for, when searching for the right Linux Distribution?

For users new to Linux, finding the right distribution can feel chaotic. I felt the same, until I understood what makes the different versions of Linux different.

So if you’re in over your head, and want to understand what an OS and desktop environment are, and what to even look for in a distro, this blogpost is for you!

I actually managed to squeeze in a new #linuxaudio soliloquy #video today. 😅

It was fun. 😎

The topic: “Favorite vs. Missed Plugins on Linux.”

For this, I made a little jam… 🙂

Best Deal? 🎹

If you want to buy a new plugin, you can check plugindeals.net to see if the plugin is available elsewhere at a lower price or if the price has been lower in the past.

I have updated the article on the FSA website about moving to Linux from Windows for music production, in light of some things that have changed since publication, and some things I missed or forgot.

Angels seems to be a really interesting new #linuxaudio #granular #effect #plugin by Sequins aka Tâches, inspired in parts by Mutable Instruments Beads.

"A tape mode with wow, flutter, and drive that makes everything sound like it's been sitting in a shoebox since the early 70s. 60+ scales for pitch quantization. Dual reverbs—one before the granular engine, one after."

I am building a new "SessionMixer" application for my Linux audio setup. The goal is to provide configurable, ergonomic controls over both the audio hardware mixing (onboard in my Focusrite Scarlett, for now) and also software-layer mixing (PipeWire) under one roof.

It's early days, but a lot of the hard problems are already cracked.

Will be released as open source. Hoping it might be useful to extend for other audio hardware.

A better look at SessionMixer, the desktop cue mixing application I posted about earlier.

If you are looking to switch to Linux, especially if your work revolves around computer use, then I have a new blogpost out for you!

I focus on why it’s worth investing time to find the right distro, and not just the one everyone recommends. Find your why, and let it drive you through the jungle of Linux distributions.

It's that time of year!

All the Samples from Mars (85 packs) for 49 bucks. If you haven't started a sample collection yet. Start here, and you're done.

Drums and Synths for the sampler of your choice.

samplesfrommars.com/products/a…

This is not an advertisement, I'm just a long time happy user, and believe samples is the way to go for many synths tasks, especially on Linux. It gives this nice randomness to use a sample of an analog synth as your oscillator.

If you haven't done so already, I suggest you go and grab @uheplugins #free Zebralette 3 #synthesizer #plugin for #linuxaudio now. 😎

If you’re curious about switching to Linux, and especially if you’re curious about Linux for music production — this might be a blogpost for you.

I haven’t been blogging for years, but now seems right to share some of the thoughts I have about Linux and Linux Audio.

First up is getting to know Linux, a thing about OSes, what’s up with all the “distro” talk, and what to expect from yourself if you consider switching, depending on your needs.

My talk about the #PipeWire native #Rust bindings is up!

I covered the broad structure of the PipeWire code, how and why I started some native Rust bindings, and some of the painful parts of using Rust as well.

Sigh, another update, another batch of problems. I updated #Debian to 13/Trixie some weeks ago, and have had a bunch of issues, most were solved.

Today I finally "solved", or rather found a workaround for #Ardour bugging out after exporting audio: it would export fine, but afterwards audio didn't play anymore, and I had to kill Ardour because it won't even quit.

Workaround was: Select "PulseAudio" in the audio-setup. It was set to Jack/Pipewire before, and that caused the problems

Sixth Sample plugins are aesthetically simple and clean and sound very cool. The free DeeLay has been one of my staples for a long time. I jumped on this full bundle for about $110 with taxes and whatnot even though I don't really NEED it:

- it's a hell of a deal on already affordable plugins
- indie dev making awesome things (including free stuff) I like using
- Linux support planned for 2026!

A new version of #rtcirqus is available. The only change is that I added a -v|--version CLI option to quickly see which version of rtcirqus you're running.

Here's todays honorable mention for #linuxaudio: ZL Audio!

I have used the Equalizer 2, and it has a lot of the features, where I would normally reach for Pro Q3. One of my favorites is double click to low cut, love that feature!

I often use a graphical EQ for finding problematic frequencies and do my low cuts. ZL Equalizer 2 will be that plugin on Linux.

Here is an introduction (OBS Youtube link):

The whole #LinuxAudio experience has become a lot better too. Back then I scripted my own sessions because I just couldn't get friends with #ladish. It was very cumbersome because those scripts were not very reliable and not very portable.

codeberg.org/LADI/ladish

My #LinuxAudio setup from July 2010. I still have the Korg nanoKontrol and the BCR2000. I sold the BCF2000 and the Focusrite 10. All the other stuff either broke down or was brought to the thrift shop.

On a software level a whole lot has changed too. I switched from a modular setup to a monolithic setup, from JACK to just ALSA, from Ubuntu to #Debian and from Qtractor to #Ardour.
