It's official: I'm recording my new album with Ardour. I've been testing out All The DAWs on Linux, and it's hands down my favorite. Stable, feature rich, and logical.
Now that its cue/clip features are maturing, they'll come in handy here and there, although that's not my primary use case. BUT having them means I won't have to go to Bitwig when I need to do some loopy thing.
Started the first project today. The music is ready, time to set it down.
I haven't tried it yet, but I just found out, it finally has arrived! I have been waiting for this…
🧵 The #automixer #plugin for #Linux!
For those who don't know, automixer is a circuit invented by a guy named #DanDugan. (Today: an algorithm.)
Basically it is a tool that compares all mic channels to all other mic channels. In effect, lowers mics not in use. When multiple mics are used, it averages their levels – very quickly.
Most good digital mixing consoles have a built-in automixer these days, such as the #AMM by #AllenAndHeath. I use it all the time when live-mixing dialogue. Especially with headset omni mics, this isn't a handy tool, it's a live-(sound-)savior. (I once used it on 16 open omni mics, would have been a feedback orgy otherwise.)
If you quickly need to mix down a multi-track recording of spoken live dialogue, this thing will save your behind.
If it works as intended, which I'll have to try.

According to random forum post number #2 and #3, I should be able to just move over my .wine folder to the new computer, and all my windows plugins should run, without me installing them again.
Of course this got me curious, so I'm moving over my folder to test this (it's slower than just installing, but more fun).
But how can a wine-folder containing nothing but Ableton and a bunch of audio plugins contain 399.395 files?
So.....
I used to be a member of digg.com. They started it back up, and I jump at the chance to get in. For those who don't know, digg was the original of what Reddit became. I started a Linux-audio group there, and in a few days, it had grown to 60 people.
Today, I went to sign in, and found that there's been a lot of problems with digg. The've been infected with bots and are going to have to rebuild everything and try again. So, digg is gone again for now.
Wasn't there a Fediverse Bluesky bridge somewhere for Mastodon?
I'd like to follow this account from Mastodon:

Our band switched to using only open-source software for music years ago. And it continues to work great for us! 🙂

So. Having failed in so many ways today because I insist on using #Linux also for video editing – my wife even offered me her Windows laptop to edit my video, because #Resolve just runs fine on it…
… actually not even a special, big, cinematic movie something. Just a nerdy video for #Peetertube / #Makertube that isn't even 6 minutes. But it took me so long to get my #NLE workflow back that I have to do a Sunday night shift with freelance work in order to prepare for an appointment tomorrow. I feel so stupid for using Linux. It could be all so much easier.
Anyways, what I was trying to do was playing #bass into the #Descent #GranularSynthesis #FX #plugin by #AudioDamage, which I actually did buy because it is available for… erm… Linux… and it can do cool stuff.
So here's a preview.

I have been extremely impressed by how great a performance I can get, when relying mostly on plugins with low CPU usage.
This is my thoughts about low latency, what plugins I use and how I created a Low Latency Template to help me.

Using Software Monitoring with Low Latency on Linux
One of my main concerns when moving from MacOS to Linux for music production was losing the hardware monitoring capabilities of my non-Linux audio interfaces (Apollo 8P + Apollo Twin).Morten Mosgaard

RE: uddannelse.social/@mosgaard/11…
Looking at the long list of plugins I have shared in my Low Latency Template-post, it’s amazing how many free quality plugins we have available for #LinuxAudio
If you don’t mind moving out of the open-source circle you have insanely good plugins from companies like AudioThing and U-he. And there is all the free huge synthesizers like Surge, Odin2, Vital and Modular System Cardinal. Crazy!
Funny thing is: I first discovered these great free tools when I moved to Linux.

AudioDamage AD061 Descent won't let me off the hook.
It's a granular delay/reverb #plugin that is a lot of fun. However, I now found out that what I'd like to have is something that is more related to the granular delay in my beloved #Soma #Cosmos “Drifting Memory Station”.
The big deep bass #drone to rule them all, with sparkling mid-high freq stars!
So, adding to yesterday's video, I added a stereo auto panner and a looper. The #Guitarix looper isn't that great to use, for real fun I'd need to get my AKAI button controller to interact.
It's the first time I am considering taking a PC-based setup on stage one fine day. The sound is just too great…
I usually use a simple Mooer RedTruck for playing fretless bass live, but in comparison to the FX by TC and the Eden WTDI + Descent plugin, it sounds cheap.

I just released the the version 1.0.0 of B.Vibratr, a "flavoured" vibrato as an instrument. Or simply call it an absolutely overdesigned vibrato effect plugin. Features:
* Put a vibrato effect on everything you want
* Control vibrato by playing like an instrument (MIDI notes)
* Describe vibrato using oscillators and/or wavetables
* Modulate vibrato using FM, PM, or AM to add texture
It's my first #LV2 plugin after a break of some 4 years.

If you have considered running Windows Audio Plugins on Linux, here is one way to do it using Yabridge and wine-cachyos.
You can't make everything work this way, but a lot of the plugins you know might work. And when it works, you'll soon get used to the small quirks you'll encounter, and just go with the flow!
I use 4-6 Windows Plugins in each production, and it's great to reach out for those old familiar tools.
