I have updated the article on the FSA website about moving to Linux from Windows for music production, in light of some things that have changed since publication, and some things I missed or forgot.

I am building a new "SessionMixer" application for my Linux audio setup. The goal is to provide configurable, ergonomic controls over both the audio hardware mixing (onboard in my Focusrite Scarlett, for now) and also software-layer mixing (PipeWire) under one roof.

It's early days, but a lot of the hard problems are already cracked.

Will be released as open source. Hoping it might be useful to extend for other audio hardware.

A better look at SessionMixer, the desktop cue mixing application I posted about earlier.

If you are looking to switch to Linux, especially if your work revolves around computer use, then I have a new blogpost out for you!

I focus on why it’s worth investing time to find the right distro, and not just the one everyone recommends. Find your why, and let it drive you through the jungle of Linux distributions.

I'm a #Linux guy now, thanks Mastodon

💚 No company pushing weird crappy products I don't want

💚 No auto-launching bloat killing the computer's performance

Why did I wait this long?! I LOVE IT

#Linux question: I would like to have a shared partition, on a #DualBoot between Windows 11 and Ubuntu 24, which would be encrypted but still useable (read & write) from both OSes.

It seems that one way to do this is via "Veracrypt" (see this post)- Anyone out there tried that?

Alternatively, it seems you can do it with #BitLocker instead this link. Anyone tried that? It seems... suspiciously simple 😅

The BSDs are *awesome* operating systems. #FreeBSD is a high performance general purpose OS. It is modern #Unix. #NetBSD is for portability, it supports nearly every CPU architecture under the sun. #OpenBSD is security-focused. #GhostBSD is a FreeBSD fork focused on the desktop.

Most of my experience is with FreeBSD, which I will enthusiastically share. It is unquestionably a solid server OS. As a desktop OS, it works quite well. It definitely does not feel like "Linux from 2004." The major desktop environments like #KDE #GNOME #XFCE are all supported and #nvidia releases drivers for the OS too. Modern hardware is supported. For *cutting edge hardware*, #Linux may be the better bet here. It's a little slower to adopt cutting edge gear because it is focused on stability and elegant solutions, not trend-chasing.

FreeBSD is an excellent OS to learn. It runs beautifully and it's more coherent and better designed. Documentation is *solid*.

Edit: Corrected errors. GhostBSD, not DragonflyBSD. Thanks @aru

Any recommendations for handwriting recognition software for #linux?

I was surprised that #xournalpp doesn't have one natively. There's the HTR plugin lellep.xyz/xournalpp_htr/ but runs after the fact.

Good morning Fedi friends!

What a difference a year makes.

A mere 12 months ago, when I saw a photo of a 🐧 or heard the word "penguin", I immediately thought of the cute black and white seabird.

Now, in December 2025, when I see a penguin plushie or a mural drawing, I immediately think of #Tux and #Linux... the world of FOSS... freedom, digital sovereignty and independence from Big Tech.

The photo below is of a plushie belonging to my little one... she picked it this morning for the walk to nursery school.

My plan for this morning: drafting the first post in the miniseries about self-hosting from the POV of a newbie... my one year anniversary is coming up next week!

Wishing you all a great day.

Valve is persuading the HDMI Forum to allow open source support for HDMI 2.1 on Linux (SteamOS) without restrictions 💫

This video standard brawl isn't a do-or-die problem for the Steam Machine - most won’t even notice.

The HDMI Forum holds Linux gaming back artificially tho. Society could just drop HDMI, adopting free'er DisplayPort where common sense is missing 😉

If Valve succeeds towards '26 - it'll be a huge victory for all.

Does anyway have advice for how to edit midi files on linux? I need to look at music notation and I need to be able to ply and hear the file.

I can't get rosegarden to play and musescore sounds like it's having buffer overruns or some other bad glitch and is unusable (without putting in some effort to fix it, which I just don't want to, ok.)

If you’re curious about switching to Linux, and especially if you’re curious about Linux for music production — this might be a blogpost for you.

I haven’t been blogging for years, but now seems right to share some of the thoughts I have about Linux and Linux Audio.

First up is getting to know Linux, a thing about OSes, what’s up with all the “distro” talk, and what to expect from yourself if you consider switching, depending on your needs.

Hi #Linux team - any recommendations for a work desktop computer with the following requirements:

  • can do basic research stuff (reading, writing) and also a little bit of basic data analysis (with python or Matlab)
  • would run a distribution like #ZorinOS or Mint
  • with a Max budget of ~£500 (tax / screen / accessories not included)?
  • Ideally buying from this website: uk.insight.com/en_GB/shop/cate…

It's for work so I don't think we can go through 2nd hand websites and such to buy this..

Thanks for any suggestions!

Today's #FreeSoftwareAdvent is `tmux`, the terminal multiplexer.

I know that `tmux` will be second nature to many of you, but I've been gradually learning it over the last year (neilzone.co.uk/2025/06/more-ti…), and I find it invaluable.

Although I had used `screen` for years, I wish that I had known about `tmux` sooner.

I use `tmux` both on local machines, for a convenient terminal environment (from which I can do an awful lot of what I want to do, computing-wise), and also on remote machines for persistent / re-attachable terminal sessions.

Idea: #Linux installation tutorial for #Windows users who want to try it as a dual-boot?

Say, I would live-post the steps as I am doing it on an old laptop, with #ZorinOS (I installed it once and it works fine). People could try and do it at the same time.
I am a Linux newbie but I would count on others here to provide tips if something is not working...
What do you think? 👀

Notes:

  • This wouldn't be for MacOS users because I don't have a Mac
  • If anyone would like to do the same for another Linux distribution, they could propose that below
  • info on ZorinOS: zorin.com/os/
  • nice video from a youtuber trying ZorinOS: m.youtube.com/watch?v=N1H0a3D8…
