Dear #linuxaudio enthusiasts and such who'd like to eventually become #linuxmusician (s). 🤗

I've just published a new #developer #interview.

This time, I spoke with Steffen Langenfeld about his #linux port of the MT-PowerDrumKit #plugin—a story I'd love to see repeated by other developer/vendor collaborations. 🥰

On another note, I'm planning to reach out to a few "in consideration" #vendor (s) to see whether they might be interested in porting their products to #linux via #crowdfunding. I'll keep you posted. 😎

hi, i'm Nicoleta - never used a microblogging platform so this is all new to me :)

i love:
* computers - but the hacker culture / free software / sustainable tech parts, not the hypergrowth dark pattern stuff that plagues our existence nowadays
* writing, which i should do more of, over at nicoleta.bearblog.dev
* art & creative expression
* music, esp. electronic
* rhythm games
* dancing, i dance lindy hop!

i'm looking for a community of like-minded people, who feel the same about tech, which is why i joined here :)

if you're local (from Bucharest/Romania), let's get connected, and form a local group for FOSS enthusiasts/hackers/tinkerers!

see you in the cyberspace :)

Trisquel 12 upgrade time. Since I normally do a full reformat and reinstall for major OS upgrades anyway I'm using this as the perfect excuse to migrate my root partitions from ext4 to btrfs. Slowly rolling this out across my fleet of machines so it'll take a while. Anyone else making the switch? #Trisquel #GNU #Linux #btrfs #FreeSoftware #SoftwareFreedom

32 years ago I started working on my first browser, Opera. I left Opera in 2011, but two years later I co-founded Vivaldi. Thus I have been making browsers now for 32 years, with a short break there between 2011 and 2013.

I have always felt that this work is important and no less today than before as more and more of you see the importance of alternatives to Big Tech.

Vivaldi is a European company with headquarters in Norway, servers in Iceland and team in Norway, Iceland, across Europe, Japan and a couple in the US.

We try our best to adapt to your needs. We build powerful browsers, with a lot of flexibility.

I welcome you to try us out and share with your friends!

I don’t use Twitter or Microsoft Edge, but my network logs tell a different story.

Following my post on why I’m skipping the proprietary "Little Snitch" port for Linux, I spent Saturday evening watching the "invisible conversation" between my family’s idle devices and Big Tech servers. Even with no one actively online, the telemetry never stops.

The receipts are now on the blog:

My new printer stopped working under #LinuxMint the other day. Re-adding it resulted in a general error message.

Finally found the solution:

In the printer's "location" field, I had specified "Mein Büro" ("My office" in German). And Cups does not like umlauts in that field. 😶

After removing the "ü", the printer worked.

Maybe this information will be helpful to someone, at some point. 🙂

[$] Development statistics for the 7.0 kernel

Linus Torvalds released the 7.0 kernel as expected on April 12, ending a relatively busy development cycle. The 7.0 release brings a large number of interesting changes; see the L [...]

New #Linux #kernel #policy: when writing code, humans can be "assisted" by "#AI", but they have to disclose it, and take full responsibility, as contributors.

While this gets celebrated as a "pragmatic stance", it simply delegates responsibilities to individual contributors that no one in good conscience can reasonably take.

Would you be willing to guarantee, legally binding, with all consequences, that your "AI" "assistant" didn't copy-paste code that's under an incompatible license? Or even proprietary, stolen one?

This is a cop out, not a responsible policy. Basically the dirty #subcontractor pattern: Everybody knows that nobody can actually guarantee what they're promising, but hey, wink wink here's their signature, they "promised" it wink wink

tomshardware.com/software/linu…

This take on LLMs that "Torvalds and the maintainers are acknowledging reality: developers are going to use AI tools to code faster, and trying to ban them is like trying to ban a specific brand of keyboard." is a straw man fallacy.

A more appropriate comparison would be "trying to ban them is like trying to ban copy pasting code from other projects" (which is indeed banned).

I recently switched to #Linux Mint. I mean, the reasons are obvious so I will save that for a different time. What really struck me was just how easy it was to actually do it. Problems were minor and mainly due to the fact that I have an Nvidia card in my laptop.

Aside from that, I was up and running quickly. Apps I wanted, (including Steam,) were easy to find and install. There were a couple apps that I needed to find replacements for, like Notepad++.

Yesterday, I deleted my #Windows drive.

RE: mastodon.social/@nixCraft/1163…

Microsoft Office is one of the largest #welfare programs in the world. it diverts REAL billions of dollars from the public coffers of governments, into the pockets of Bill Gates and his #EpsteinClass cronies.

Brasil pays for basic universal health care and UBI for kids because it said NO to Microsoft in 2005 & moved to #linux & #LibreOffice.

thanks to Trump, #Microsoft finally lost the 2nd largest economy in the European Union and the 7th largest in the world.

merci a la France.

France is transitioning government desktops to Linux, with each ministry required to formalize its implementation plan by autumn 2026.

Oh nice! The developers of Little Snitch have made a version for Linux. Like they say at the start of the post, I never found an alternative I was happy with when I switched from macOS to Linux. Although, with vastly more open-source software in my workflow it was also less necessary.

hey so this is probably completely pointless but: looking for a job (NZ or fully remote willing to hire a kiwi) in SRE, security, or linux/Unix system administration. 15 years expereince administering Linux and Unix boxes, intermediate level of experience working with docker compose and containerisation and container security. No prior job experience unfortunately, all those 15 years were mostly personal projects and small-scale stuff for friends. Currently running an entire multi-machine personal cloud infrastructure with a demonstration of all the services I have running at status.highenergymagic.net. Entirely willing to accept entry-level job placements, no expectation of being paid a lot or anything, just want to be doing something and move the needle a little on my current "being broke" status. #fedihired #infosec #cybersecurity #linux #unix #docker #sre #DevOps

Please boost for reach, any job offers please DM me.

Ok! Initial build script for writerdeckOS v2.0 is done.

I even coded a menu to allow for easy change of default word processor / text editor.

The Terminal Edition defaults to using wordgrinder, but the follow word processors and text editors are loaded into the system and its easy to swap over to them:

- WordGrinder
- Tilde
- Word Perfect
- Joe
- Emacs
- Vi / Vim
- Nano
- Micro

And it's easy to install and run a custom app (text editor or otherwise!).

Also, I added nmtui - a Terminal User Interface for Network Manager to connect to the internet if needed (eg to install a new app or to configure synced cloud folders).

I need to run a couple more QA tests for this and then I'll start putting together the installation media. After testing that on a couple of laptops, I'll push it out officially!
