* A plain serial number
* A license file
* A one‑time server‑issued, permanent authorization (at purchase time) that can be backed up and restored on new computers
* A DRMed system with guaranteed post‑company-shutdown survivability
All pass.
What fails are systems where:
* Re‑authorization requiring the vendor is unavoidable
* Vendor silence = dead software
* Long‑term ownership is contingent

"Vendor‑dependent copy protection" = Any licensing where continued use of legally purchased software depends on the vendor (or their servers) being available now or at any time in the future.
This includes:
* Any online activation (even once)
* Server‑validated licenses
* Account‑based activation portals
* Third‑party‑tied activation (PACE, Verifone, etc.)
* No documented offline or escrowed fallback
* Machine / hardware ID tracking

"Vendor Dependent Copy Protection" better covers what we are actually not wanting in this day and age where all copy protection tends to look like one another. This better definition redefines what we want and narrows the scope of the definition, while also covering all copy protection types.
Essentially, the honest want to be able to buy the software, back it up (along with the authorization), and restore it at any future date to a new computer.

I've given this a lot of thought, and I realize that those of us who want copy protection that doesn't punish the honest, yet still deals with the pirates need to better define what we are needing and wanting in this day and age.
I am proposing that when we talk about copy protection that doesn't punish the honest, that we specifically start saying that we don't want:
"Vendor Dependent Copy Protection".

I’ve often ranted about copy protection that hurts honest users more than pirates.
For years I’ve argued serial numbers or keyfiles are the right approach. Today, though, some “serial” or "keyfile" systems require servers.
Also, now there are internet‑active “hybrid” schemes (that look like challenge/response, but are meant to survive company failure or server shutdowns--for example, TAL-Software's new copy protection.

So I'm using this beautiful old #Sitala #WindowsVST, which is a dead simple drum #sampler player #plugin… triggered by #LspTrigger.
Now #LSP Trigger only triggers one note of course, but I'd like several notes to be played by the #Sitala #VST.
So far I am abusing #MidiChord, yet another magic tool by @x42, but it can't do chromatic clusters. 🤪 So I need to arrange my samples in the scale… which is possible, but it's less samples available than I would wish.
Any idea?
( @mosgaard … back on the #SoundDesign construction site for a a short while… need to pimp up those knocks on my bunker door, before running to the next #EvenTech thing. )
