i'm a sucker for a lightshow. that's kinda why i need that gnome screen blank extension i built.

starting to get a feel for where this wants to head. the living reverb itself is the main feature of the display. now i just need to organize those controls into better groups, and i think we'll be in the ballpark.

the lightshow is cool tho. glassmemphis also has a fun lightshow.

here's a differently bad developmental stage in the user interface.

moving towards making the display the central surface. just need to refine my user interface library a bit as i go.

thing sounds incredible, though. and i got permission to use those super sweet captures done by Cian Riordian of Barefoot Recording.

One issue that I ran into is that I couldn't get the Boss Tone Studio software to run on Linux under WINE, so I had to use WinBoat (a Windows VM) instead.

Basically I installed WinBoat, passed the USB through to the VM, updated Windows within the VM, then got the latest drivers and software for the Katana, as well as the MSVC runtime, and now it works just fine. (It wasn't recognizing the amp for a while before I updated Windows, for some reason, but worked after updating.)

Kind of a heavy fix, not ideal, but it works...

It would be really nice to eventually have this working in WINE or to have some kind of open source alternative configuration tool.

this might be useful to someone else... one of the things i missed from my windows-based studio was the mechanism i'd worked out to temporarily mute (black out) my displays, especially when listening critically.

i hacked together a quick gnome shell extension that does the same thing. super+alt+b when it's running gets you all-black-screens. any key or mouse movement brings it all right back.

I decided to buy this audio plugin Aava today which is the fanciest kind of convolution "reverb", where you can throw in 4 different sounds (impulse responses) and blend your input signal through all of them. Plus you can change the size / pitch of the impulse responses in real time without the whole thing falling silent, which is something I've not seen any other convolution tool handle.

I was pretty much sold by that audio demo "Turn your drums into a bassline" on the page below, but having a 30-day trial is great too.

Since Korneff has released a new 1176 emulation, and you really can't have enough 1176 as a vocalist, I thought it was the right time to make a #LinuxAudio 1176 shoot-out.

They all sound great. UA is the odd one out of course, because it's running in Wine.

Korneff and ACMT, both Linux Native, has a small low end drop-off and low latency. UA a very small low end boost for some reason, and a small latency. ACMT and UA is very basic, and really a "does it's thing" kind of plugin.

Didn't have a chance to have a look at this vibe coded #pipewire control center app yet.

It just occurred to me. I have always had in my mind that Valve’s and Crossover’s work on WINE was a great boon to Linux gaming. I hadn’t made the connection until this post that since Macs suck for games, that Valve’s and Crossover’s work has been a great boon for MacOS too. Mac users, like Linux users, owe a debt of gratitude to WINE and these two!!

Actually, it's up to v3.0.2 now. I noticed this morning over at KVRAudio that they mentioned in a thread that they found a bug in the v.3.0.1 package that they wanted fixed. So if you've downloaded v3.0.1, go and download it again to get v3.0.2.
