...ist das ganze Fediverse. Das ganze Fediverse ist ein Mikrobloggingdienst. Das Fediverse ist buchstäblich von Eugen Rochko erfunden worden und das ActivityPub-Protokoll gleich mit. Das fing alles mit Mastodon an.

Nicht einfach nur Halbwissen, sondern hanebüchener, gefährlicher Blödsinn.

Das Fediverse fing nicht mit Mastodon an. Das ist eine Tatsache. Und es wurde auch nicht als reiner Mikrobloggingdienst erfunden und schon gar nicht mit einem netzwerkweiten Zeichenlimit.

Friendica und Hubzilla sind beide älter als Mastodon. Das ist eine Tatsache.

Mastodon ist von Januar 2016.
Friendica ist im Juli 2010 rausgekommen. Fünfeinhalb Jahre älter als Mastodon.
Hubzilla entstand so, wie es ist, im März 2015. Zehn Monate vor Mastodon. Aber eigentlich ist es locker dreieinhalb Jahre älter als Mastodon.

Friendica und Hubzilla haben beide kein wirkliches Zeichenlimit (über 16 Millionen). Beide nutzen Mastodons CW-Feld für Zusammenfassungen, und das haben sie schon getan, bevor Mastodon auch nur eine Idee war. (Übrigens ist das mit dem CW-Feld gar nicht von Eugen Rochko.) Beide können mehr Textformatierung produzieren, als Mastodon überhaupt auch nur anzeigen kann.

Und bis Mastodon so groß wurde, daß es mit dem Fediverse gleichgesetzt wurde, hatte damit niemand im Fediverse ein Problem. Niemand.

Aber seit Mastodon richtig groß geworden ist, heißt es: "Das ist unser Fediverse, das ist das Mastodon-Fediverse, das Fediverse ist nur für Mikroblogging, und alle haben sich dem anzupassen!"

Leute, die seit 2011 auf Friendica sind, werden regelrecht dazu gezwungen, Friendicas Kultur, die seit 2010 genau auf Friendicas Features abgestimmt ist, vollständig aufzugeben und statt dessen Mastodons Kultur anzunehmen, die nur auf Mastodon ausgelegt ist, aber auf Friendica überhaupt nicht funktioniert.

Viele Mastodon-Nutzer führen sich ganz ähnlich auf wie die europäischen Kolonisten in der Neuen Welt, die die Ureinwohner dazu zwangen, die europäische Kultur anzunehmen, ihre eigene Kultur dafür aufzugeben und sich als katholische Christen taufen zu lassen. "Wir sind jetzt hier die Herren, ihr habt zu tun, was wir sagen!"

Der einzige Unterschied ist: Die Kolonisten haben nicht geglaubt, daß sie zuerst da waren und die Ureinwohner nach ihnen angekommen sind. Viele Mastodon-Nutzer glauben aber tatsächlich, daß sie zuerst da waren und die Friendica- und Hubzilla-Nutzer nach ihnen angekommen sind. Weil, kann ja anders gar nicht passiert sein.

Jetzt kann man als Mastodon-Nutzer nämlich sagen: "Ja, aber auch wenn es Friendica und Hubzilla schon vor Mastodon gab, müssen die sich doch irgendwann nach dem Start von Mastodon mit Mastodon verbunden haben. Also, irgendwie so nachträglich."

Nee. Nix mit "nachträglich". Das ist für viele Mastodon-Nutzer unvorstellbar, daß es etwas im Fediverse gibt, das schon vor Mastodon im Fediverse war.

Aber: Friendica und Hubzilla haben sich nicht mit Mastodon verbunden. Mastodon hat sich mit Friendica und Hubzilla verbunden. Und zwar, als es gestartet ist. Weil es auf einem Protokoll aufgebaut wurde, das Friendica und Hubzilla schon vorher verwendeten (neben einigen anderen): OStatus.

Seit es Mastodon gibt, ist es durchgängig mit Friendica und Hubzilla verbunden. Das ist Fakt.

Bevor es Mastodon gab, gab es im Fediverse auch keine albernen, selbstauferlegten Zeichenlimits. Das ist auch Fakt.

A propos Protokolle: ActivityPub gibt's ja auch erst seit 2017. Wer hatte es zuerst? Mastodon?

Nein, nicht Mastodon. Hubzilla.

Mastodon hat sich aus dem ActivityPub-Protokoll rausgepickt hat, was ihm gefiel, das dann auch noch verbogen, eigenen Krams dazuerfunden (Webfinger z. B.), und den ganzen Rest ignoriert es bis heute weitgehend. Hubzilla hingegen hat ActivityPub streng by the book implementiert.

Dies zum Thema, daß Mastodon angeblich die ActivityPub-Referenzimplementation ist.

Last but not least: Warum ist Mastodon am größten? Weil es am besten ist?

Nein, es ist am größten, weil 99,999% aller Fediverse-Neulinge seit spätestens Februar 2022 hart nur nach Mastodon gerailroadet wurden. Denen wurde überhaupt nichts davon erzählt, daß es noch was anderes als Mastodon gibt. Auch deshalb nicht, weil die, die sie ins Fediverse holten, selbst vielfach glaubten, daß das Fediverse = Mastodon ist. Und die Hälfte dieser Neulinge der letzten gut drei Jahre glaubt heute noch, daß das Fediverse nur Mastodon ist.

Wenn die Leute statt nach Mastodon nach Misskey gerailroadet worden wären, glaubst du allen Ernstes, die wären danach in Scharen nach Mastodon abgewandert, wenn sie nachträglich davon erfahren hätten? Sei ehrlich.

Sagen wir, du bist auf Calckey. Du hast einige tausend Zeichen zur Verfügung. Du nutzt die auch aus. Dafür hast du sie ja.

So, und dann kommt ein Mastodon-Nutzer an und schnauzt dich an, du sollst gefälligst entweder deine Posts auf nicht mehr als 500 Zeichen begrenzen oder dich aus dem Fediverse verpissen.

Dann ist es definitiv nicht mehr irrelevant.

Ach ja: Das ist kein theoretisches Konstrukt, sondern @crossgolf_rebel - kostenlose Kwalitätsposts exakt so passiert. Der kriegt übrigens ständig von Mastodon-Nutzern auf den Deckel, weil er sich für das Fediverse außerhalb von Mastodon einsetzt, statt, wie sie es eigentlich erwarten, "Fediverse" und "Mastodon" gleichzusetzen.

Oder sagen wir, du bist auf Friendica. Da wundert sich dann eine, warum du auf Mastodon mehr als 500 Zeichen tröten kannst. Du erklärst, du bist nicht auf Mastodon, sondern auf Friendica, das ist ganz was anderes als Mastodon, und das hat kein Zeichenlimit.

Und sie blockt dich sofort, weil sie der felsenfesten Ansicht ist, daß du ein böser Hacker bist und Friendica ein böses Hackertool, mit dem du dich illegalerweise ins Mastodon-Fediverse reingehackt hast.

Dann ist es auch nicht mehr irrelevant.

Übrigens: auch keine graue Theorie, sondern @Jakbous Schürz exakt so passiert.

Das sind alles so Sachen, die kriegst du als Mastodon-Nutzer, der Mastodon immer brav wie Mastodon benutzt und so, wie es von Mastodon-Nutzern erwartet wird, schlicht und ergreifend nicht mit. Deswegen beharren viele Mastodon-Nutzer auch drauf, daß sowas nie passiert und Nicht-Mastodon-Nutzer auch in keinster Weise diskriminiert werden.

This update has a LOT of changes and fixes in it! I think I got in everything everyone who gave me feedback asked for (check the README file "Changelog" section for details). Lots of attention paid to making buttons, tabs, and drop-down appearance consistent, and lots of new CSS variables for customization plus a new option for customizing Bookface (more on that in a moment).

Bookface 1.8 has been tested with both the current stable 2024.12 and 2025.7 Release Candidate versions.

The most obvious change you'll probably notice is that the responses below posts and comments now look completely different:

If multiple people engaged with the post in a certain way you no longer have to click the count to see the list, it's a popover that appears on hover (active on touch devices). This is a lot cleaner and more consistent with how these are displayed on other social media platforms.

You'll also notice that the Main Menu missing icons are in place. This is a change that's coming in the next Friendica release anyway, but Bookface lets you have it right now:

Someone specifically asked whether the main navigation buttons could have labels on them:

I didn't turn it on by default, but nav button labels are now coded into Bookface and if you're using CSS variable customization they're easy to turn on:

The label text is also customizable. Until now the only way to implement such customizations was either for a server admin to manually put them into the header or footer sitewide or for individual users to put them in a user content stylesheet just for your web browser. That's why I'm also releasing a new Friendica addon called "Bookface Custom" that, if your server admin installs it, allows you to customized every one of the Bookface CSS variables to your heart's content.

We usually get registration requests for our Friendica (social.trom.tf) and a way to filter the bots out is to require that everyone sends the reason why they want to join our node before we approve or dismiss their request.

It was not very hard to tell if one is a bot since they would have generic messages. But recently we got variations of these messages:

i want to try friendica, and found out about trom.tf from this instance. looks like a cool place to start. already on fedi as @🎣 sylph in progress

I thought it sounds legit if they also let you check their other fedi account. And so I did and this time their profile is a long blabbing one but at least admitting that they are "a thirsty little LLM" (Large Language Model).

So yah....we are fucked. These people are ruining the internet. We use our limited resources for good purposes to provide people with a trade-free social network. And now these people are infecting even these little projects....

Awful...

EDIT: It seems the account was not an LLM despite saying so. The user "identified as a robot", whatever that means, and overall had a very weird bio. Please check for yourself:

A few people said I am a jackass for posting about this person, but considering their over the top weird bio where it says the account is an LLM, coupled with the fact that nowadays these "LLM" bots are infecting the internet, it is reasonable for me to think this person was a bot.

The conversation could have been simple: "Hey I know I said in the bio that I am an LLM, but I am not." and then I could simply ask them to register again. But the person blocked me and a few others started to bark in the comments. This is not how we can communicate and solve anything people...

Apart from the groups (forum) thing, Friendica is really good at “floating” posts (which of course could be topic-specific) to “the top” of their streams, based on interactions in the thread. This is a user setting, and the user can set various criteria for when a topic should bounce up to the top of the stream, but the thinking is very much like in Discourse (and other) forum software.

The user can chose between having threads (and that is the full threads, starting with the original post on top and with all the comments in the thread) bounced to the top based on “latest interaction”, “latest post” and “latest creation”. Why is this good? Well for very busy threads that thread could otherwise dominate the view for a day or two, and if you wish to see things your friends who are not in that thread post you can filter so that “latest creation” perhaps give you a wider view of the rest of your contacts (who are not interacting in the “monster thread”).

For the user of Friendica this means that their home stream isn’t filled by disconnected replies saying “I agree!” or “That was beautiful!” and you then have to open up that message to get the context (like on Mastodon); In Friendica you instead get the full thread, and the “I agree!” message is clearly shown as a reply to something specific that you also can see, which might be a reaction to a reply in a longer thread that you also can see.

So my moc.d-x-b.com/ is running #Akkoma (akkoma.social/) and my friendica.hellquist.eu/ is running #Friendica (friendi.ca/), both hosted by me on my own servers. Then I also have a #Pixelfed account on pixelfed.social/i/web/profile/…

They all have different purposes and functionality. #Mastodon itself is just the most famous Fediverse service, and where most people land. Probably this is due to the fact that there is a company behind it, whereas the other services are run by collectives of individuals, with no pay or other incentives, other than the conviction they are doing a good thing. It is a shame they are not taking up more article/news space though, especially since Mastodon itself isn’t as good as some of the others when it comes to features.

The flipside of the features coin though is that some have added “opinionated” features of the underlying ActivityPub standard, which is cool for those users of that particular service, but it also fragments the overall Fediverse further. Having said that, Friendica for example is better than Mastodon at following, and being compatible with, other Fediverse services.
