I was a jailer for two years. Not proud of it, I needed the money.
One of the repeat offenders we had was an old man who was HIV positive. He went to jail several times while I was working there and always for the same thing. He would shoplift items from a store while in full view of a cop. This old man had a cane and could barely walk. There was no way he expected to get away with it.
After he was arrested we had to process him and the medical questions always led back to his HIV diagnosis. The state provided him with his HIV medication while he was awaiting trial where he always pleaded guilty. He was always released after serving less than 60 days pretrial. Upon release, he was given six months worth of his HIV medications (which he needed to survive) and he would shoplift again when he ran out of medication.
It would have been cheaper for the state to just give him the medications without him needing to be part of the criminal justice system first.
He was shoplifting so he could stay alive.

The most profitable patient is one with a chronic (highly functioning) illness, not a cured one.
When I lived in the US I was always amazed by the amount of ads for painkillers and other fixes. I came to the understanding that healthcare for many was not about curing people, but about making people able to work. I've never seen so many people with chronic illnesses poorly addressed as in the US.

Writer Cory Doctorow @pluralistic on how he predicted violence against US #healthcare CEOs. As usual, he makes an *awful* lot of sense:
But the assassination of Brian Thompson is a wake-up call, a warning that if we don’t solve this problem politically, we may not have a choice about whether it’s solved with violence. As a character in “Radicalized” says, “They say violence never solves anything, but to quote *The Onion*: that’s only true so long as you ignore all of human history.”
Neither party made HC reform much of an issue in the 2024 pres. campaign. Our faith in the Dems fixing the problem: so flimsy -we voted for a guy who's been promising to produce a better HC plan -vowed to repeal the ACA.
It took an assassin’s bullet to bring our clusterfuck of a HC system back into the HLs -why Mangione -embraced in some quarters as a working-class hero -not celebrating murder -but called the media’s attention to such a life-&-death-.

Since the Affordable Care Act’s passage, the top five health insurers’ annual profits have jumped 230 percent, with much of that going to #UnitedHealthcare
America’s largest health insurers have raked in more than $371 billion in profits since the passage of the #aca.
More than 40 percent of that net income went to UnitedHealth Group, whose annual profits skyrocketed by nearly 400 percent while the company denied nearly one in three medical claims from its policyholders.
Insurers garnered these profits as the average American families’ premiums have risen to nearly $26,000 a year. In all, since the ACA was passed in 2010, more than $9 trillion of revenue has flowed to the country’s largest health insurance companies.

But UHC told us if we left the hospital by our own will, & it wasn’t via ambulance, they were not going to cover her @ the next hospital we went to,” she said.

I can not bring myself to condone murder but the fact is that the #USA allows all of us to die earlier* than other developed nations because of our #healthcare policies.
Why are our policies so bad? Because we do not have #universalhealthcare
Why do we lack universal healthcare?
Because we have more #lobbyists in Washington than #senators and #representatives combined.
Then they all lie to a poorly educated populace and the circle goes on.

Healthcare professionals are supposed to lead by example. When they don’t wear masks, it can:
🤝 Hurt trust in medical advice
🛡️ Put vulnerable patients at risk
❓ Confuse the public about safety
They should know better, but we need to address why it happens—whether it’s burnout, peer pressure, or something else—to ensure accountability and keep everyone safe.
The new UnitedHealthcare #UHC #CEO, #AndrewWitty, gave a zoom address to the company today that was leaked to independent journalist Ken Klippenstein.
Witty told employees "we will continue to guard against...unnecessary care" and to "tune out the critical noise".
There's absolutely no 'care' in #UnitedHealthcare.
And from his accent I suspect Witty grew up in a country that has #universal #healthcare.
“UHC has the highest instance of denials out of all major providers, refusing an estimated one-third of claims submitted … UnitedHealthcare also has the largest market share of health insurance policies, with roughly $215 billion in revenue.”

Last November, the estates of two former UHC patients filed suit in Minnesota alleging that the insurer used an AI algorithm to deny and override claims to elderly patients that had been approved by their doctors.
The algorithm in question, known as nH Predict, allegedly had a 90 percent error rate — and according to the families of the two deceased men who filed the suit, UHC knew it.
