Hello fediverse!

I need your help to feature all of the amazing services that are part of the #ActivityPub realm.

What are some of your favorite ActivityPub handles to follow on #Funkwhale, #Peertube, #Pixelfed, #Bookwyrm, #Wordpress, #Truefans, #Castopod, #Akkoma, #Friendica, #Lemmy and others?

Your replies will be categorized by @jejord, @AileenLalor, @miaq and @marci so that we can feature these accounts to our Flipboard users and work to ensure they render properly on Flipboard.

I'm excited to help evangelize the many great projects here and advocate for their adoption and funding.

in reply to Mike McCue

The services are many and all interesting, among the projects presented for example I am interested in Mastodon's project regarding the "byline" function for editors and journalists: a line under each article that refers to the author of the article and gives information about the magazine and more, it would not be bad to implement this on other instances, such as flipboard.social and on @FlipboardUK
in reply to Mike McCue

On Mastodon we get to follow hashtags, an idea that has been kicked around is the ability to federate posts to all instances that have people following any of the hashtags included in the post.

So, basically, treat a hashtag as an actor so a post with #startrek on instance A will federate to instance B if someone there follows #startrek

That would be a huge game changer.

Just tagging in @evanprodromou

I know you can't reply from threads, but thought you'd like to see this thread.

Sounds like a worthy project! Here is something timely your users might appreciate:

If interested by a bit of "entertainment", I have an old WP blog, 100% fedified + POSSE'd (Fediverse only), with 2100+ posts on African Musics since the 50s and still publishing.
Already 90+ FediFollowers and so many likes & boosts...

Can one follow/post to a #Lemmy community from flipboard? Now with football and basketball seasons soon starting in the US, being able to integrate flipboard with @nfl and @nba would be fantastic!
in reply to Raphael Lullis

@raphael @nfl @nba great suggestions! yes you can follow from Flipboard now and you can post and reply if your account is federated. Will make sure this works as expected.
in reply to Mike McCue

If following Lemmy communities is a possibility from flipboard, then please take a look at https://fediverser.network/communities. This is part of my https://fediverser.io project which aims to make migration from Reddit to the Fediverse more seamless. It lets people automatically discover all the Lemmy communities that correspond to their favorite subreddits.

You should be featuring #OWGF of course ! 🙂

Not just because it’s inspiring people about Our (potential) Wonderful Green Future but there is also the #WordPress #ActivityPub integrated website that promotes the #Fediverse. www.OWGF.org which is also in the Fediverse here @owgf.org
+ The #PixelFed account https://pixelfed.social/OWGF
+ This account too https://mastodon.world/@OWGF

At Beamship, the @admin account tracks DogsOfMastodon and CatsOfMastodon hashtags 😂

Dogs often stomps the cats 😆

You should check out the @mastercrasher PeerTube channel created by @harrybo. He’s got some great Rally Showcase videos where he talks about his favourite rally cars and then test drives them in the EA WRC game.

Here’s one of the videos. It’s VERY good.

@jascha @mouse Thanks so much for the introduction, Jascha. @mouse I love BookWyrm.

I work for @inventaire
and we implemented some ActivityPub (see https://wiki.inventaire.io/wiki/Fediverse#Inventaire_and_the_Fediverse).
Please check https://mamot.fr/@inventaire/107405333892235843 to follow some Wikidata entities on the fediverse
in reply to Mike McCue

@FediFollows does threads [eg https://social.growyourown.services/@FediVideo/112037485212998386] with recommendations and also has a website that you can browse by category.
Checking subject-specific server directories (like med-mastodon.com, social.coop, fediscience.org, newsie.social, among so many others) would be a good idea too.

From the top of my finger (tongue) I say

@FediFollows and @FediTips for the amazing job they're doing helping new users in Mastodon and providing curated lists of handle to follow by topics

@UKFilmNerd for writing movie reviews

@gamingonlinux for news about Linux gaming

Thank you, we really appreciate your love :adragonlove:

As for Peertubers, here's a few from our own instance:

- @creative_commons_music
- @linuxgameralpha
- @superdicq
- @glitchfoss

And I see @harrybo has already been suggested

in reply to The Innkeeper

@innkeeper @creative_commons_music @linuxgameralpha @superdicq @glitchfoss @harrybo super helpful! Thanks for mentioning these. We'll make sure these render well in Flipboard and then feature them to our users. Not nearly enough people know about #PeerTube.
in reply to Mike McCue

Agreed. I feel like a big part of the problem though is lack of content, mainly because of people not wanting to take on the cost of video hosting. That could be a solvable issue though if we make use of the opportunity of the many users who would happily help provide storage and bandwidth if it was dirt simple, easy.
in reply to Blort™ 🐀Ⓥ🥋☣️

I'd love to see an official *Desktop* Peertube app, with video viewing, commenting and uploading functionality, but also with a single configuration click that let people automatically seed Peertube videos from their desktop.

It could be taken one step further afterwards, by letting instances upload directly to the shared community storage rather than needing their own. You'd see an explosion of content, which would bring more viewers.

in reply to Blort™ 🐀Ⓥ🥋☣️

You may need to provide a benefit to bandwidth providers if the network started getting saturated though. Non financial/vanity, so it didn't encourage fraud, but maybe something like badges when commenting, based on what percentile they were in for providing community bandwidth.

Down the line it would also be great to see Podcasting 2.0 style streaming sats for viewed minutes, but that's probably better off offloaded to a Peertube plugin.

#Peertube

in reply to Blort™ 🐀Ⓥ🥋☣️

@Blort These are fantastic points. Video storage, uploading and streaming is quite expensive to do and needs some kind of business model to support it at scale. This is one reason why I think a federated Patreon would be a huge unlock for expansion and health of the fediverse and video creators.
in reply to Mike McCue

Absolutely. Some form of non-advertising based monetization, really is crucial. A federated Patreon would be a fabulous step forward, especially if it could incorporate podcasting 2.0 style SAT streaming. High friction one off donations will only ever get a project so far.

It's a set of extensions for RSS. Some of them add features like transcripts, subtitles, livestreaming, episode comments and my personal fave, the ability for listeners/viewers to stream Sats (ie millionths of a Bitcoin) to content creators based on how long a listener/viewer listens/watches.

It's reinvigorated some podcasting substantially, and there's potential to do the same for visual media like Peertube too. I'm curious if it could be extended to a more eco friendly alt coin.

in reply to Mike McCue

@pfefferle

Of course I like, that we can federate also our own channels:

@bonndigital@bonn.video (our Peertube channel)
@JottEmm (Blog of @Johannes)
@bonnjetzt, our local calendar and @bonndigital@bundescast.de

But we have plenty more channels connected with the Fediverse!

in reply to Mike McCue

I've done a thread of nice PeerTube accounts at https://social.growyourown.services/@FediVideo/112037485212998386 but if that's too long, you might want to feature:

@michellemay
@shifter
@reece
@ewenbell
@weirdwriter
@vkc @gbryant
@polykit
@jan_beta
@rees
@johnny_blanchard
@liz
@thelinuxexperiment
@harrybo

ALSO... an extra special shoutout to the amazing live DJs & music livestreams at:

@video

(This is an OwnCast-powered account.)

in reply to Mike McCue

Are you also looking into #WriteFreely as a federated blogging platform? (Long form) text would be ideal for Flipboard, no? Can't tell, as I deleted my account years ago, but might reconsider.
in reply to Michael Gisiger :mastodon:

@gisiger Totally. In fact we recently stood up a Write Freely instance for the beginnings of our engineering blog: http://flipboard.team
in reply to Mike McCue

#BandWagon is a great new bandcamp alternative that I’m really excited about.
