Re-inventing the federated wheel because you don't know that wheels exist

@Kevin Davidson @Third spruce tree on the left @Fediverse News The lack of comments is actually the biggest shortcoming on #WriteFreely. #Plume has comments, but it's Schrödinger's Fediverse project (it is or is not dead).

A #FediHack would be to follow your own WriteFreely blog on something that does microblogging and boost or repost the notifications you receive from your own blog. It also makes finding followers easier, even if they follow the microblogging account rather than the long-form blogging channel.

By the way, another shortcoming of WriteFreely is that you can't see how many people follow your blog, much less who does.

Maybe it's time for a Plume fork.

@Third spruce tree on the left @Kevin Davidson @Fediverse News Another reason is because #WriteFreely is being overrun by spammers. The instance I'm on is invite-only, for example, but one can ask nicely, and if they're convinced that whoever asked doesn't want to peddle escort services or something, I'm sure they'll let them in.

I think I should post something on my blog again to have some more human-made content there, heh. So many unpublished or even half-finished blog posts...

@jupiter_rowland Other Fediverse users can *follow* your blog's address, but thats about it.
Unlike the WP ActivityPub plugin, there's no real interaction with WF blogs. In WP+AP, replies get nicely tacked onto the blog post.

#WriteFreely

lastly - WF is maintained.... but the maintainers are working on their paid WF instance, Write. As, so.... last update was in November, who knows when new features'll get added. WF isn't dead, but its not the most active OSS.

@jupiter_rowland Also - I think one of the things that prospective #WriteFreely users aren't well made aware of is the degree of Federation WF does.

When you publish a blog post, the user @ yourblog @ yourwfinstance posts into the Federation. It appears like this (below). Basically a link to the actual post.

Now, your mastodon account can boost it, or just stick the link in a toot with additonal commentary.

@jupiter_rowland I recently setup my #WriteFreely instance because I had the spare PC kicking around. Import and export capabilities are baked into WF - I mean it just dumps the markdown for each post into a zip file. I think one of the reasons why there are so few open registrations on WF instances is most of us are in the same boat: we don't wanna pay for $WordPress$ so we self-host our own blog.

But hosting someone else's blog now is an added responsibility.

@Kevin Davidson @maegul @Fediverse News Alternatively, take the big leap, use #Hubzilla for everything and give up the clean look provided by #Plume and #WriteFreely for something that's actively maintained.

@Kevin Davidson @Fediverse News Did you check the list on the-federation.info? There's quite a number of #WriteFreely instances with open registrations. And some others allow you to apply for an invite.

@fediversenews
I meant to say that before deciding on #Wordpress I did look into the two native #Fediverse blogging platforms #Plume and #WriteFreely
Plume is apparently end of life and no longer supported. They are actively discouraging anyone from using it. I guess stop listing it in articles about the Fediverse.
For WriteFreely I only found one instance open for registrations, but it appeared to be all spam and scams.
Not good.

I created a #WordPress blog and wasted a whole evening moaning about the process.

@Chris Trottier @Fediverse News The irony is that we already had #Medium in the #Fediverse, so-to-speak, namely in the shape of #Plume and #WriteFreely.

@Alex0007 I've got a blog on #WriteFreely myself. It used to be on #Plume before that, but then the instance disappeared without a notice, and at that time, Plume seemed to be half-dead anyway.

Should everything else fail, I can still move the posts to #Hubzilla itself. They won't be as distraction-free, but they'll be on the same domain and project as embedded pictures.

@jupiter_rowland Personally i'm using #WriteFreely for those posts, but project has a lot of bugs and i can't recommend it to anyone.

Bugs: ActivityPub is out of sync on edits, broken fonts on first load, bugged posts import etc..

Here is obvious bug which they marked "Not a bug" lol

Så att jag testade att blogga lite med #writefreely på den öppna instansen write.bz.

Jag finns där också på @samuel@write.bz. Det jag gillade var att det var så himla avskalat! Både när man editerar (se bilden) och när man läser själva inlägget:

https://write.bz/samuel/forsta-blogginlagget-med-write-freely

Men det verkar nästan lite VÄL mycket avskalat. Kan man ens ladda upp bilder? Någon som vet? För det är väl det enda jag verkligen skulle sakna.

Jag pingar @selea som vanligt för jag vet du har en instans :)
