If you watched movies and TV in the 1980s, you knew Dabney Coleman for his comic roles in “9 to 5,” “Tootsie,” and “Buffalo Bill.” Coleman died Thursday at 92, his daughter Quincy Coleman told The Hollywood Reporter. “My father crafted his time here on Earth with a curious mind, a generous heart and a soul on fire with passion, desire and humor that tickled the funny bone of humanity,” she said in a statement. From Lily Tomlin to Ben Stiller, fellow actors are also paying tribute to the award-winning actor. THR has more: https://flip.it/huRaxh

Elemental (2023)

The visuals, especially the city are beautiful and creative.

The relationship between Ember and Wade didn’t really work. It is this relationship that takes up a large part of the movie and that doesn’t bode well for the movie.

What really worked and that I would have had a lot more of was the relationship between Ember and her father. That was the emotional center of the movie. I am sad that it wasn't given enough time.

Rated 5 out of 10.

“I'm thrilled to be working in New Mexico again,
Story-wise, this new show could have been set anywhere in the United States. However, I keep returning to the Land of Enchantment for the beautifully cinematic landscape and to continue working with the best crew ever. They've been making me look good for seventeen years now, and I figure, ‘why fix it if it ain't broke?’”

I have Gareth Edward’s Godzilla on as background watching. I’m always amused at the scene in Hawaii where the soldiers on the rooftops employ small arms fire on Godzilla. I always wonder what the expected results were.

A movie I completely missed when it was released and only watched for the first time last night...

John Carter (2012)

What should have been a major film, arrived and quietly disappeared at the time.

I had no idea it was based on a book series by Edgar Rice Burrough. Also I had no idea it mostly takes place on Mars.

Apparently the source material has been referential for other major sci-fi and adventure films.

It's a story about a Civil War Confederate Captain, who while searching for gold, is transported to Mars, where he encounters alien species, a princess, and a plot to manipulate control of the planet. Meanwhile he discovers he has increased strength and ability to jump great distances while on Mars.

It's not a bad film, and was surprisingly more entertaining than I expected. There are some good moments. By the way, it's also a love story.

Stars Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciarán Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy. and Willem Dafoe

I still think Paramount+ should rename itself Tom Cruise+ and be done with it.

Today I watched...

The Fall Guy (2024)

Both an homage to stunt work and the TV show from the 80's

Ryan Gosling plays Colt Seavers, a stuntman that after an accident gives up on the profession and becomes a valet.

Emily Blunt is Jody Moreno, a cinematographer, former love, and now first time director for a sci-fi epic involving cowboys and aliens.

Colt is called back to his profession by a producer who has worked with him in the past, but also wants him to find the missing star of their new sci-fi film that he's working on.

This is a total popcorn film. Stunts become progressively more impressive as the film moves along. Not only are the stunts impressive, so are the fight sequences. It's also a love story.

I liked it!

Be sure to watch beyond the credits, which shows behind the scenes stunt work, for a final scene.

Stars Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, Stephanie Hsu, and Winston Duke

Directed by David Leitch

Stunt doubles are highly skilled and trained professionals who are often at risk through their work, but part of their job is staying away from fame. “Anonymity has always been the contract that we’ve agreed to, and it’s partly for the audience’s benefit,” says David Leitch, director of "The Fall Guy," who was Brad Pitt's stunt double for a decade. The Hollywood Reporter talked to him and Ben Jenkin, Logan Holladay and Chris O’Hara, three of the stunt performers from "The Fall Guy" about how they created the movie's action sequences, and the fight to get industry recognition for their profession. Tell us in the comments what you think the greatest stunt in movie history is.

Sure, forcing the CEO out just before earnings calls and in the middle of negotiations to sell yourself is a look. Just not a good one.

Sure it'll be great for stocks.

Yesterday I watched...

Challengers (2024)

Two high school tennis players are smitten with a high school tennis phenom. We flash forward to her being married, and then a series of flashbacks involving competition, sexual tension, dating, and more competition among all the leads. They all have great chemistry with one another.

By the way, just the act of eating is this film is filled with implied sexuality. Also it made me want to have a churro.

It's a film about tennis, relationships, and control.

Features a mostly techno soundtrack that thumps along with the on court and off court action.

Be aware this is an arthouse type film, and will not likely appeal to everyone. Me, however, I enjoyed it. It definitely spurred conversation afterwards.

Stars Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist

Directed by Luca Guadagnino

Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford on the set of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980).

Code 8 Part II (2024) isn’t a bad movie, but it isn’t great either. I liked the first one and was surprised they decided to do a sequel.

The series takes the ideas of X-Men and strips the mutants of their colorful Spandex and inserts them into the real world.

The robots are still iconic, but they take backseat to some Boston Dynamics inspired robotic dogs.

The corruption in the police force trope is in high gear with this movie.

There were a couple of really great sequences in the movie. One using extreme slow motion for full effect and it turned out great.

Rated 6 out of 10.

I started watching...

Madame Web (2024)

last night and I'm about half way through the movie.

(sigh)

Within the first 10 minutes, you realize the movie isn't being handled well.

There's problems with the dialogue, the camera angles, the story, the special effects, and even the casting feels off.

First of all, do people talk this way is real life? Some of the dialogue is laughable.

The story isn't helping. I'm half way in, and barely know any of the characters. Why are there four people dressing like Spider Man? What is the motivation behind the main villain?

I couldn't help but wonder if there were too many characters.

It's about a girl whose mother dies after giving birth to her, but the mother just before giving birth, is bitten by a mysterious and hard to locate spider. Years later the girl develops powers.

Stars Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O'Connor, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott

Directed by S. J. Clarkson

For a decade, Hollywood hasn’t aggressively fought piracy because it saw people would pay if they made them a good deal.

But as streaming has gotten worse and more expensive, consumers turned back to file sharing. Now the industry plans to get Congress to pass new legislation to stop them.
