Oops, I started my game over from scratch today! I hadn't gotten very far with it anyway because I've been developing tooling for it for quite a while, and the gameplay was rudimentary. I tried to add some cover mechanics and improve the enemy AI, but the way they were designed was an obstacle... so I'm starting over and applying everything I've learned since I last restarted it!

I've seen people say that Baldur's Gate 3 was lightning in a bottle, and I think that's totally incorrect. It's pure and simple, Larian Studios did the work. The work they did on their previous games (Divinity: OS 1 & 2) built the foundation that allowed them to create BG3.

Larian is NOT a typical AAA dev... I still consider them indie, despite their size. Indie simply means that they do not have to answer to a publisher. While this was D&D, they simply purchased the rights and Hasbro did not have any input in the creative process.

Larian works on projects they love. They create what they want to create. They seek community feedback after a certain point, but ultimately, they are in charge. They do not focus on monetization schemes or addictive mechanics... they just make good games. They earned this. It isn't lightning in a bottle... it's math.

Some more tiling experiments today. Specifically, experimenting with offsets. In both of these, the sides of the platforms are part of the floor tile, but the top surface is on the 48px x 24px grid. For the floating one, the sides of the platform are not tiles at all. For the one surrounded by water, the water tiles don't contain any platform at all, they are just layered over the sides of the tile above them.

I'm not sure how much advantage there is to this

I've gotten sick of my games looking really boxy and obviously tile based, so I'm going back to trying to achieve the look of Hyper Light Drifter, where there is significant variety in the tiling, angled walls and platforms, and a roofline broken up with silhouetted features. Here's a mockup I did today with the Pineapple 32 palette which does not really compare to HLD, but at least is not just a rectangular room with one type of wall tile and one type of floor tile...

I never thought I ever say it again, but I've made a game. A jam game, but for real this time. It's been 8 years since the last time I made one.

I made a game!

It's a short 90's style point and click adventure, inspired by a background by @lashman

You're famous Luxembourgish detective, Poirmento. You've gathered all the suspects in the library and are just about to reveal who the dastardly murder is, when you suffer a sudden bout of memory loss!

You must figure out who everyone is, what's happened and who committed the crime, all without letting on that you have no idea what the last three days held.

Fun fact: There is just ONE scripted scene in the trailer. The shot of the black hole at 0:07 to 0.11. The rest is all unaltered gameplay. YES, even the lack of HUD. You can just turn it off in the game settings.
