It seems this issue has resurrected, or resumed
My entire point (all the noise notwithstanding) focused on
Default opt-in versus default opt-out
This is an agent --> recipient transaction
Default opt-in: the recipient is opted into (and participates in) the agent's action whether the recipient --> knows of <-- the action or not
Default opt-out: the recipient is opted out of (and cannot participate in) the action whether the recipient --> knows of <-- the action or not
Neither default opt-in nor default opt-out have any logical meaning if THE RECIPIENT DOES NOT KNOW OF THE AGENT in advance
Here is one of the oldest prior discussions I participated in on Github with Ryan (snarfed) Barrett re: bridgy-fed back starting in February of 2024

Opt in/out prompt
If you do implement some sort of opt-in system, I don't want a new notification every time someone follows me. I use fediverse software that supports both public and private posts. If I post it pub...WisTex (GitHub)
Google uses that same "indexable" flag but ignores everything else, keeps deleted content cached for weeks.
We shut it down after pushback. Was that the right call? Don't hesitate to share, this concerns the whole Fediverse.
- It should have stayed up (55%, 121 votes)
- Right call to shut it down (26%, 57 votes)
- No opinion (18%, 39 votes)
This will power interest-based discovery across the #Fediverse, helping people find each other through shared interests. Still all through #ActivityPub of course, with real-time deletions and updates.
Hello World!
We're building a social web alternative to open graph, powered by @webintents and @fedidb
The website and documentation will be published soon, stay tuned π
Cool!
I didn't know about that before.
It's a great tool; searching across instances is something that has been missing until now! Especially whether federalization will take place or not...
A Fedi search engine that plays by Fediverse guidelines β who wouldn't welcome that?

The walled gardens of the big tech-platforms will be their demise. So much innovation is lost because of the need for control.
Really, the U.S. platforms are not forward looking. The have hit reverse a long time ago, going full speed towards history.
In the previous century I could pick up a phone and call anyone. Try that with the big platforms. NoT wiTHout a DeAl!
Open protocols are the way ahead.
The Future Is Federated
...
And will be federated for the amazing work of the amazing people in the fediverse.

WebIntents - Universal Follow Button for the Fediverse
Simple, beautiful follow buttons for ActivityPub. Works with Mastodon, Pixelfed, Loops, and all fediverse platforms. Less than 10KB, zero dependencies.webintents.net
If decentralization is the future of social media, where millions or even billions of people share knowledge, then we can learn a lot from how the Open Knowledge Foundation (@okfn) and the Wikimedia Foundation (@wikimediafoundation) built cross-border, international movements with clear missions.
These two organizations are just two examples, but they demonstrate an important point: decentralization worked because communities were intentionally nurtured, not just because the technology was open.
The Fediverse, powered by the ActivityPub protocol, already has the technical capacity to thrive (UI tweaks aside).
What we still lack is the decentralization of communities, including shared ownership, coordination, and a mission that extends beyond individual instances.

Having some silly fun with @stegodon a new fediverse platform with an SSH TUI interface. The first screenshot is the web profile, the second is the TUI interface.
This is the first command line UI for ActivityPub client I've seen that has an actual backend server platform tied to it.
We are entering a new step in the development of #Holos and we need more people to test.
We have reopened subscriptions through the app: holos.social/signup
We wrote a page explaining how we implemented #E2EE DMs over #ActivityPub: holos.social/e2ee

@MxSpoon "Account portability is a major reason why we chose to build a separate protocol"
"I think itβd have been a difficult collaboration if we chose to use AP, especially since we werenβt willing to compromise on some of the decisions"
github.com/bluesky-social/atprβ¦
I think one way or the other they want
a) to monetize it
b) to control it
That's why AP wouldn't suffice. Tech reasoning is just word salad. They could have helped W3C and AP but chose not to.

Already a decentralized federated protocol
Activitypub already exists. Why not just work on that? Why is this needed?dmbr0 (GitHub)
ActivityPub, the protocol that powers much of the fediverse and allows the various fediverse platforms and servers to talk to each other, has become an official W3C standard 8 years ago!

The most popular fediverse platforms are not American.
That's awesome. Together we're proving that a world of thriving alternatives exist beyond the USA.
We need to embrace that.
So I started MadeInCanada.social for my fellow Canadians.
