A vertical image of the top part of a marabou stork. If you've ever imagined what a pterodactyl looked like, give it a pink neck with lots of folds and some fuzz over it, on top of a feathered body on tall legs. Its wings are dark grey, its belly is white feathers that look so soft but that eye visible on the head that is turned to the left is enough to make us keep our distance even if we wanted to risk that huge beak.

One of the young jackdaws has become particularly relaxed around me. They injured their wing a few weeks ago and were unable to fly, so hopped around in the safety of our garden till they'd recovered their strength. Now, they've decided they like it here and stick around long after the other crows have finished their breakfast

Pigeons look like they've seen too much.

A pigeon is standing it profile. It has a dark grey head and a light grey body with dark wing stripes, with bright orange legs and feet. Its eye is surround by an orange circle and itself is rimmed in darker orange, then lighter orange with a round dark pupil in the middle. It looks very wide awake and aware.

I've seen this film.

This is brilliant, I think they're all juveniles, flocking together and probably travelling quite widely around the countryside.

I'm pleased these starlings gathered here for a while, attracted by the now short grass in the fields. There must be over 100, on the pole and cables and a lot feeding on the ground. #Birds #BirdsOfMastodon

The heron from yesterday's walk

I would never have noticed it, sitting quietly up a tree in the shade, across the canal, had a young man with sharper eyes not spotted it ahead of me. I noticed him photographing something as I walked home, some 100 metres ahead of me. He considerately moved on as I approached and gave me a turn with this noble bird 😊
