Reputation is one of the most valuable things any social project has. It can inspire people to do great things together.
Money is, *waves hand*, helpful; but just a thing. It's not valuable in itself, only in what things it can be transacted to get people to do for you.
If you trade inspiration for transactional power, then you no longer need to lead people, just money.
And money just isn't as valuable as people.

I love how the #FSF unerringly comes out in support against anyone trying to reduce the harm software is used for and maybe not hand it to murderers.
"It's only free if you don't try to stop anyone else from using it to kill people via the license terms" is the most US take *ever*.
(Not that OSI is different.)
