“The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday to regulate commercial humanoid robots. The new requirements include including permits, emergency kill switches, fire safety measures and tracking of possible job displacement.”

It’s a pretty good start. Kudos to Supervisor Ray Mueller for getting ahead of the game.

This is a black and white street photo in portrait format of the front of a cable car, packed with tourists in downtown San Francisco, California (2015).

Extending from the right edge to the centre of the image is our cable car (street car or tram). Only the wooden upper part of the cable car is visible, the wheels and chassis are out of view below the photo. It is viewed close up and with the right side in view. The cable car is filling the entire height of the photo, half the width and viewed from a metre or two away. The front portion is open with the legs and feet of the seated passengers visible hanging over the side. Between the seated passengers are vertical wooden posts supporting the roof with white poles attached to the outside enabling any passengers standing on the foot platforms stretching along the sides: to 'hang on for dear life'. Behind the open section is the enclosed cabin, made of wood at the base and with vertical rectangular windows above. On the wooden side are a few simple adverts, blurred slightly out of focus. Ahead of the cable car, the parallel set of rail tracks stretch ahead with the central metal groove hiding the all important moving cable. To the left is a further set of tracks. This and the background are heavily blurred out of focus and slightly overexposed to white. Just visible is a man, perhaps five metres away, crossing the street. Again, ahead of the cable car, on the left side of the road is a line of buildings, the uppers floors out of view above the top of the photo.

This is a grungy night time photo looking along a wooden pier aligned with and towards the TransAmerica Pyramid in downtown San Francisco (2012).

Extending away from the camera and into the distance, about 150m away is the wooden pier. The rough wooden planks that form the surface cross at right angles to the pier and stretch away from the base of the image to the centre of the photo. On the side of the pier are metal railings with illuminated ornamental street lights spaced every 3 or 4 metres and casting a star like glow or aura around the lamp. Set inwards a metre of so from the railing are pairs of park benches facing outwards. The wooden planks, metal railings and street lights converge to a point with increasing distance towards the city end of the pier. Beyond is a night time cityscape with the high-rise buildings descending downwards from the business district on the left side to the low-rise residential buildings on the right. Aligned with the pier and in the middle ground, no more that one km away, is a tall, narrow, pyramid-like skyscraper with a sharp pointed top, lit with a single light. Like all of the surrounding high-rise buildings, some of the windows are lit, most are dark. Above is a ink black, dark sky, devoid of any detail.

This is a black and white street photo in portrait format viewing along two long, straight and parallel sets of rail tracks with an old wooden Milanese tram (street car) on the right set of tracks. The Embacadero, San Francisco (2012).

In the foreground and stretching away from the camera and into the distance are the two sets of rail tracks. The camera is positioned between the two sets of tracks, about one metre above the surface and angled along the tracks. The rails are embedded into a bed of cemented medium sized, round stones: similar to those found on a beach. The two pairs of tracks are separated by a gap of about two metres. On either side of the tracks is a pavement area, lined with street lights and taller, six or seven metres tall, evenly spaced palm trees. Strung between the streetlights are cables stretched at right angles to the street that support the power cables that run above the rail tracks. On the right set of tracks is our old Milanese tram in motion away from the camera. The tram is viewed from behind and at a distance of no more than ten metres. The tram is wooden above the wheels, has vertical, rectangular windows and is packed with people inside. Above the tram is a single gantry angled upwards and touching the power cable above. Ahead and above is a clear and cloudless sky, graduating from bright white at the base and becoming ever darker towards the top of the photo.
