#macOS is by no means perfect (although, y’know, close). One glaring design error is the menu bar, which doesn’t handle the – uhum – edge case where there are too many menu bar icons to display on screen (either because they bump up against the current app’s menu or, on the laptops, the notch… which, well, don’t get me started on the notch…)

Anyway, so a lovely little indie app called Ice fixes the problem the way #Apple should have.

You know you can use your mouse and keyboard between different Macs using Universal Control and copy/paste between them (which makes it really easy when manually migrating settings, etc., between machines), but did you know you can also copy/paste whole files using Terminal:

On the first Mac:

cat my-file.txt | pbcopy

On the second Mac:

pbpaste > my-file.txt

Piping to pbcopy is something you’ll likely find useful in general.

(You can also drag/drop files to Finder.)

Setting up a new Mac, I finally got round to documenting my setup, including the utilities, privacy apps, etc., I use as well as my fish shell and Helix Editor configurations, Homebrew apps, fisher plugins, etc.

In case you’re curious, here it is:

NetNewsWire for #macOS and #iOS is the least open-source-feeling open-source app I’ve used. The polish and stability it has feel absolutely premium, and honestly, it’s more polished than a lot of paid apps. iCloud sync has never let me down. If you want an RSS reader, I can’t recommend it more. netnewswire.com

Super nice #macOS related fixes upcoming in #LibreOffice💪❤️
macOS dictation had a problem where dictated text would only show, once you make a pause speaking. That was inconvenient as it is much easier to gather your thoughts when spoken text appears immediately.

Another issue that has been ongoing for many many years was, that when you scrolled the sheet in calc and while scrolling was still ongoing pressed cmd for some operation, the zoom level would change. This extremely annoying behavior is no longer.

Both fixes done by #PatrickLuby of #NeoOffice - we should all thank him!

Will take some time for those to trickly down into stable, but 25.2 will bring those fixes for sure.

I made a video about my new app, Browser Actions!

This, too, took forever, but the upside is that I'm getting better at this, so theoretically it should be easier for me the next time around.

When live coding on a Mac, don’t just mirror your screen as no one will be able to see what you’re doing. Use, e.g., SwitchResX to mirror your screen at a larger retina resolution (1280×720 works if presenting on a 1920×1080 projector).

That way, you shouldn’t have to alter the text size in your terminal, browser, etc., and the audience will still be able to read your screen. Also goes for live streams, etc.

Gotta say, after a transactional OS like Fedora Silverblue where you always run the latest OS, every day, with tiny, atomic updates; downloading a 5GB file to update macOS (and having it take half an hour) feels downright ancient.

(Mind you, I believe Fedora are in the process of screwing that up – at least in the short term – with their upcoming container-based updates because, of course, the ultimate customer is enterprise¹.)

If you’re looking for a browser extension like Stylus (which lets you override browser styles, scoped to specific sites) for Safari on macOS, check out Cascadea. It’s by an independent developer (Mike Freuden), doesn’t farm you for your data, and seems to do what it says on the tin (in my limited few minutes of testing right now¹) :)

Just reading this error message throws up so many potential causes for me to check and debug and try so it gets fixed that I'm *exhausted*.
