If you're someone who has gotten used to using natural language queries in search, Marginalia has a great explainer on syntax to use with keyword-based search engines.

"Search terms can be excluded with a hyphen.

Using quotes will cause the search engine to be as literal as possible in interpreting the query.

Parentheses can be used to add terms to the query without giving weight to the terms when ranking the search results.

Samples:
soup -chicken
Look for keywords that contain soup, but not chicken.

"keyboard"
Look for pages containing the exact word keyboard, not keyboards or the like.

"steve mcqueen"
Look for pages containing the exact words steve mcqueen in that order, with no words in between.

apology (plato)
Look for pages containing apology and plato, but only rank them based on their relevance to apology"

Why is #Mozilla collecting our #search data?

source: https://blog.mozilla.org/en/products/firefox/firefox-search-update/

Sensitive topics, like searching for particular health care services, are categorized only under broad terms like health or society. Your search activities are handled with the same level of confidentiality as all other data regardless of any local laws surrounding certain health services.

Hello Mozilla, I use Firefox because my privacy is important to me. The best security is still achieved if you don't collect the data. That is why I will use a fork that does not collect search data. It would be nice if Mozilla took user privacy more seriously.

Watching #GoogleIO and there are some cool demonstrations of data center cloud computing, but there's also this fog of dystopia surrounding these demos.
The announcements for search are horrifying. Google is full mask off.

Phrases like "search for something, and we'll collect all this data for you" basically equates to:

"We sucked up ALL the data from people who really did the work, and we're going to give you the results of their hard work, but we wont take you to the site that generated the data. You can stay on the search page, and the site's traffic will plummet."

This is shocking.
