We've just defederated from pradva.me. A seemingly empty instance with only 33 users that was producing almost twice the activity as mastodon.social.

We haven't found this instance in public blocklists. Does anyone know about them?

I'm having issues they can't resolve lately. B2B doesn't play nice with Mastodon. Any good, reasonably priced alternatives? Refer-a-friend links won't insult me

Anyone have any idea what could cause federated instances to *not* pull in profile pics and headers?

I am running a separate Sharkey (Misskey fork) instance and there's a few examples of this happening.

I have CDN with Cloudflare and that seems to work. The "remote caching" feature on Sharkey is turned off. I DO have Authorized Fetch on (maybe this is the issue?) However, both my instance and another instance have issues pulling icons and headers both ways (Mine doesn't show up on certain instances either)

Most of the stuff that I talked about here, I've just done today, so it COULD be that it just needs time to update, but I am unsure right now.

The fact that there's no plans for moderation expansion is quite depressing.

I feel terrible for the Mastodon admins that feel they are stuck with this project and have to do "manual" moderation for thousands of users across 23,000 instances and hundreds of thousands of posts a day....🤦‍♂️

645 days after setting up my own Mastodon instance, I finally tackled tuning my Postgres database config last wk & today setup multiple Sidekiq Processes after my queue got to 10K for the second time this wk

I read the guides multiple times over those 645 days but it never clicked in my head. I was afraid to mess with Sidekiq because I didn't want to brick my instance.

Then today, during the thunderstorm, the old grey cells clicked in and I understood.

What's the proper URL for searching through Mastodon if you were doing a search via a URL?

For example, searching 'SearchContent has: media" Google would be https://www.google.com/search?q=searchcontent+has%3A+media"

I would like to add my Mastodon instance to my browsers search engines list. Interestingly, Miskey and Sharkey and some other federated platforms I've been to are already added.

I'm getting great results for content from my Mastodon search than Google and Bing, + no ads, and tracking.

one of the nice features of running your own instance is that you can increase the number of allowed characters to something a bit more than the default.

That way you can fit those URL's (and your argumentation that has nicely formed sentences instead of abbreviated ones) in your toots and your reactions.

I strongly recommend doing that. #mastoadmin

Fun fact #2 about masto.nyc hosting:

In the prewar apartment I (and, by association, all the masto.nyc infra) live in there are very few power outlets, so they are all utilized. A few of the outlets are controlled by light switches! Including the outlets for our Internet equipment.

In the early masto.nyc days, guests would mistakenly try to turn off lights but ended up just shutting down the whole site. I 3d printed a little piece so people couldn't flip this switch anymore 💀

There's a little-known setting on Mastodon called "limited federation mode". In this mode, there is no federation except with instances that the admin has specifically named on an allowlist. This is a lot better for user safety, and may suit some instances.

I came across this interesting bit about multiple Mastodon-instances on a single server, howbeit, it's from 2018 and there have been a lot of changes since then.

The author wanted to run two instances off the same base code, different databases, re-using as much existing infrastructure as it could, essentially, and appears to have done so.

I don't know why anyone, other than wanting to migrate their instance to a new one, would do this, but here it is. #MastoAdmin

I currently use @mastofeed which is really great when it works, but if it doesn't it is somewhat of a black box, so I would prefer to self-host something simple that can create similar toots.
