Hi all. I've got an older #computer running #Windows10, and I'm thinking about putting #Linux on it since I've always wanted to try it out and think this computer might run better with Linux. I read a topic on audiogames.net about Linux #accessibility, and I saw a few recommendations for #distros to try out. To any #blind Linux users, is #NixOS a good one for a beginner, or should I try #LinuxMint or #Ubuntu? Also, what's the best way to install Linux and replace #Windows? Thanks.

I'm not involved with #Fedora, but presumably there's a release process that is written somewhere.

This sounds like a bug in not just the software, but also the release process. Perhaps the way to tackle the software bug is to fix the release process so that alarm bells ring *before* next release.

Grabbing prerelease images and testing and raising bugs in the run up to release might provoke some action - if you have the time to do that. *someone* clearly needs to!

The fact that #accessibility nowadays is better in #videogames than on #linux is not a compliment to videogames

Just checked and yes, the screen reader is still broken in Fedora 40. (Cannot be controlled; keyboard shortcuts/modifier key doesn’t work.)

So this is yet another release where the screen reader is broken by default.

It’s amazing to me that this is not a showstopper.

Congratulations. Does it have a fully functional screen reader?

This cannot be said often enough:

"Accessibility issues don't just come from what's visible in a design, but from what's not visible."

...and here we go: #id24 will return this year on 12 September 2024.

@chernosktrainstation This is great but can we also talk about how Fedora ships with a broken screen reader by default?

Here's a neat exploration of the curb cut effect for accessibility in @gnome - using accessibility tools to aid in testing automation! Has pros and cons identified in the article, but interesting nonetheless.

In solidarity with the blind and vision-impaired community, I propose that twice a year, on the World Sight Day and the Global Accessibility Awareness Day, fediverse admins disable images on their servers to highlight the importance of writing good image descriptions.

Who's in?

"Rosin listened to the screen reader, a tool to help him go through an online list of upcoming events at the club. However, he was confused when the audio described a toilet as it went through the schedule. He discovered later that the image of bullet points used for the list had prompted the mistake."

Jupyter notebooks in 2024 is still not accessible.

In his #PyCascades talk, Venkatesh Potluri (who is blind) noted that popular Python libraries like matplotlib etc still can't embed alt text.

He made a patch for it, but the notebooks still don't pick up alt text.

"Blind internet users struggle with error-prone AI aids", reports an article in the Financial Times:

#FT has a paywall but three articles can be accessed for free if you register.

TLDR is that AI #accessibility widgets over promise and under deliver. Repeatedly.

Thank you all for welcoming me to the Fediverse!
I came from reddit, where I have been a mod of the r/HopePunk sub for quite some time.

Everyone knows what happened to Reddit, and probably knows about Lemmy as well.

I'm here to post about #HopePunk, #SolarPunk, #indieauthors, #unions, #accessibility, and about making the future a better place for us all.

There will also be #memes. Oh yes.
