Climbing into the clouds, we looked back towards the fjord and this beautiful sight.
September 2025: Across the stepped slopes of Botnshorn (467m/1532ft) towards Geirþjófsfjörður¹ in Vesturbyggð, Westfjords of #Iceland.

Terraces
The stepped side of the mountain is clothed in autumnal colours. Carpets of mosses and grasses are interwoven with gravelly channels.
All around us is the sound of running water.

View From The Top
Near Bolungarvík in the Westfjords of #Iceland is a 638m/2093ft high mountain named Bolafjall.
A road was built to the top in 1986 for a radar station and in 2002 it was opened to the public. In 2022 an observation deck was added.
The view across Ísafjarðardjúp and Denmark Strait is astonishing. A fishing boat is lending scale. Hornstrandir Nature Reserve was clearly visible on that day.

"Polar Elegy
An elegy, the aurora writes,
Her pen a comet’s trail,
Her ink a cosmic palette,
Her words a silent soliloquy
Inscribed on the parchment of night.
A requiem, she composes,
Her notes a constellation’s song,
Her rhythm a planet’s pulse,
Her melody a celestial refrain
Echoing in the polar silence."

Lagoon Fjord
October 2025: Lónsfjörður is a shallow tidal lagoon and part of an unique coastal environment, a mix of black sand beaches, rivers, and wetlands ideal for wildlife.
This part of Lónsöræfi (Lón Nature Reserve) supports a range of migratory birds including whooper swans in the summer and autumn, some of which can be seen in this shot.
Eystrahorn in eastern #Iceland, is 756 metres/2,480 feet tall.

Welcome To Narnia
Clothed in autumnal colours, streams tumbling beside us, waterfalls on every steep rockface, and the beauty of the long fjord leading to the sea. Magical.
Fjarðardalur, the "Fjord Valley," softly lit by sunlight from behind us and patched by cloud shadows ahead.
Looking like a scene from a fantasy novel, this is Mjóifjörður in eastern #Iceland.
Edit: Thanks to @logi for the heads up.

The Green Dance
22:30 on a cold night in late September. After an hour of standing in the middle of a field, shivering even though our clothing was warm, waiting for the predicted #aurora to appear we were finally rewarded with this lovely display.

Icelandic is in danger of dying out because of AI and English-language media, says a former PM.
Iceland’s former prime minister, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, has said that the Icelandic language could be wiped out in as little as a generation due to the sweeping rise of AI and encroaching English language dominance.
Katrín Jakobsdóttir and her co-author want the 350 000 people who speak the language to fight for its future.

#Iceland’s relatively mild #climate is shaped by a crucial network of currents that winds its away around the #Atlantic Ocean transporting heat northward — without it, the island would be much icier & stormier. As evidence mounts these currents could be on course for #collapse, Iceland’s govt has designated the risk a #NationalSecurity threat, prompting a a high-level response into how to prepare for this “#existential threat.”

"#Iceland deems possible #Atlantic current collapse a security risk"
If the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation #AMOC collapses, all of Northern #Europe is screwed. It won't happen soon, but it is a real possibility
All we have to do is take #ClimateChange seriously... oh, yeah. Fuck.
