If you're choosing a Fediverse server to sign up on or to move to, don't just pick one at random.
Each server is totally independent and run by totally different people, so they can vary a lot in terms of rules, safety and technical reliability. It is best to choose a server from a human-curated list of reliable servers (don't use automated server lists).
This guide has lots of info about how to sign up, including links to human-curated server lists:

Today's #Friendica tip! :dog:
You can go to your settings, navigate to the "Display" settings, and activate the "Stay local" checkbox.
This makes it so that when you click on people's profiles from other places, you don't automatically visit their home site, but instead it displays their profiles directly on MyWebFriends! This is the behavior you might know from #Mastodon and makes sure you stay on #MyWebFriends so you can easily follow them or browse their posts.
The disadvantage you should be aware of is that you might lose out on some information from their profiles that the site they call home offers; for example, profile decoration that Friendica doesn't have, you might miss out on some not-yet-synchronized replies or posts, special formatting, smileys and other server-specific info.

If you know a site or online service with an RSS or Atom feed, you can follow it from the Fediverse using the RSS Parrot service. Instructions for using RSS Parrot are on its website:
TL:DR: Mention the RSS feed's address in a post along with the RSS parrot account @birb
The RSS Parrot account will reply with a Fediverse account you can follow for that feed.

Do you use Mastodon on a computer? Have you tried Mastodon's optional "advanced web interface"? It provides a Tweetdeck-style multi-column layout where you can have unlimited timelines, lists and searches open all at once. More info including how to activate it at:
➡️ fedi.tips/how-to-activate-mast…
Mastodon can be used through single or multi-column, both are officially supported. Some people find multi-column overwhelming, but others find it really essential. Use whichever you prefer!

If you want your public posts to be searchable by their entire contents (not just hashtags), you need to tick a particular box in your profile settings. Lots more info here:
➡️ fedi.tips/how-do-i-opt-into-or…
For privacy and safety reasons this feature is switched off by default. You need to switch it on if you want your own posts to be "full text searchable".
This only affects posts that have a public visibility setting. Posts with other visibility settings are not searchable at all.

Mastodon now supports searching by keywords and phrases, so some people asked should they still bother using hashtags?
Yes! Hashtags are still a really good idea!
1) A lot of people follow hashtags, if you use a tag they follow your post will appear in their timelines
2) A lot of people prefer searching by hashtag as it indicates an intended topic, rather than accidentally mentioning a word
3) Not *every* server supports full text search, but all of them support hashtag searches

Hey new people! 👋
You can do likes by clicking the ⭐ favourite button. Favouriting lets the author know you liked their post.
You can do re-tweets by clicking the 🔁 boost button (AKA "re-blog" on some apps). Some apps use a 🚀 symbol instead of the arrows. Boosting shares a post with your followers.
To view a post later, click the 🔖 bookmark button. No one else sees your bookmarks.

When joining a server, it's really important to check that they promise a handover period if they ever shut down. If a server shuts down without warning, you will not be able to transfer your account elsewhere.
All the servers listed on fedi.garden and joinmastodon.org/servers promise at least three months warning if they ever decide to shut down, which is enough time to find another server and transfer your account. (See fedi.garden/about-this-site & joinmastodon.org/covenant)
Do you have a Nintendo Switch? Do you want to post screenshots and video clips from it on your Fediverse account?
There's a guide on NintendoLife which explains how to send them to your phone, tablet or computer:

Once you've transferred them, you can post them with your favourite Mastodon etc app.
(You can also do it by swapping the memory card but remember to power the Switch totally off first, don't just put it on standby.)
