It's worth posting this image as well - taken the previous day and looking North instead of South, this image spurred the goal of taking a series of 1:1 images across my #Backpacking trek through the #Drakensberg range.

Dark cliff faces and jagged rock spires emerge from a thick, billowing sea of cloud that fills the valley between the escarpment walls, with two small birds visible as tiny specks in the pale sky above. The black and white treatment and layered tones of dark rock against luminous white cloud give the image a graphic, almost ink-wash quality reminiscent of classical East Asian landscape painting.

Ocean In The Sky (2024)
Named for the wave like cloud inversion below, I took this image early morning, shortly after golden hour and before the heat of the day burned off the clouds below.

I was motivated to capture a 1:1 ratio image of this location as part of a photographic challenge I set for myself in the region.

Dark, needle-like basalt pinnacles rise from the foreground escarpment edge in sharp silhouette, framing a view across a vast sea of cloud that fills the valleys between multiple receding mountain ridges and serrated peaks stretching to the horizon. The black and white treatment deepens the contrast between the near-black foreground spires and the luminous white ocean of cloud below, with successive ridgelines fading progressively lighter into the pale background sky.

He went out with me and did his #1 right away after I came home from work. After supper, when he usually does #2, I tried to make him do it before forecast heavy rain starts. But...he wasn't interested and wanted to come back in. We will try again after the rain lets up.
It's super humid . While I was with him in the yard, mosquitos ate me alive...Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer here in GA...But school is out, no more school buses for a while!!!
