Biology, Computing, and the History of Molecular Sequencing: From Proteins to DNA, 1945-2000 by M. García-Sancho, 2012

Sequencing is often associated with the Human Genome Project and celebrated achievements concerning the DNA molecule. However, the history of this practice comprises not only academic biology, but also the world of computer-assisted information management. The book uncovers this history, qualifying the hype and expectations around #genomics.

A Honeymoon of Grave Consequence, Stephanie Burgis #Books #Fantasy #Romance #BlogFiredrakeOrg blog.firedrake.org/archive/202…

"By contrast, the #GoogleBooks project largely used a patented non-destructive camera process to scan millions of #books borrowed from libraries and later returned. For #Anthropic, the faster speed and lower cost of the destructive process appears to have trumped any need for preserving the physical books themselves, hinting at the need for a cheap and easy solution in a highly competitive industry.
When asked about this process, #Claude itself offered a poignant response in a style culled from billions of pages of discarded text: “The fact that this destruction helped create me—something that can discuss literature, help people write, and engage with human knowledge—adds layers of complexity I’m still processing. It’s like being built from a #library’s ashes.”"

A federal district court just ruled that training #AI tools on copyrighted texts is fair use.
techcrunch.com/2026/07/20/anth…

#Anthropic is in the clear for training #Claude on millions of books without permission or payment. However, it's liable for obtaining many of those books illegally, and its settlement of those claims (about $3k/title) was approved by the court.

So far this decision only applies in the Northern District of California. But it breaks the ice and will (as lawyers say) be "persuasive but not binding" in other districts.

Voracious reader, book collector, and scholar Ignacio Sánchez Prado writes about how he began collecting books when growing up in Mexico, and why it was and is so important to him to develop his working library. He takes an interesting look at the future or not of such libraries and of how they relate to scholarship.

What am I reading?
Nearly finished Matt Haig's 'How to Stop Time'. A bit similar to The Midnight Library, though a different story, with its flying about. Might try another of Matt's but am finding the wandering in place and time and prose a little tedious.

Next to read: 'Death Do they Part' by Jonathan Whitelaw, 3rd in the Parker Sisters' (Cosy) Mystery series. Something lighter after Matt's tome.

My own book 'A Question of Resistance' by Paul Smith, a time-slip novel is being reviewed by a book club in Northallerton & I am going to the club to answer questions and listen to their critique next week. 'Scared' doesn't do my trepidation justice!

An Immense World - Ed Yong

Enter a new dimension—the world as it is truly perceived by other animals

The Earth teems with sights and textures, sounds and vibrations, smells and tastes, electric and magnetic fields. But every kind of animal, including humans, is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble, perceiving but a tiny sliver of our immense world.

Book publishers sue Google for copyright infringement over Gemini AI training: theguardian.com/books/2026/jul…

'A group of major publishers have filed a lawsuit against Google, accusing the company of illegally using millions of copyrighted books to help build its Gemini artificial intelligence models, in “one of the most prolific infringements of copyrighted materials in history”.

The case, filed in federal court in New York, has been brought by three publishers – Hachette Book Group, Cengage Learning, and Elsevier – and bestselling American author Scott Turow.'

Up to 60% of medieval texts and 95% of manuscripts have vanished, study finds

by Dario Radley

Many stories from the Middle Ages never reached the present. A new study suggests the loss was far greater than scholars once thought. Researchers estimate that up to 60% of medieval literary works and more than 95% of the manuscripts that once carried them have disappeared over time.

Celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary This Fourth of July govbooktalk.gpo.gov/2026/07/01…

They say this is a time "to reflect on the blessings of being a beacon of hope and democratic freedom."

Oh honey, the #AmericanEmpire has not been a beacon of anything for a good while now other than #imperialism, #warfare, #invasions, and toppling governments they disliked then enabling Right Wing dictatorships.

And before any of you exceptional gringos come to whine, read a fucking book or two.

Colonial ranting aside, you can also get the documents they mention via GovInfo. Need help? Ask your local librarian.

Today, my new book comes out, marking my official entry into publishing. Here after I'll put out a book every month.
I wrote this novella to reward those who supported #WindShortFilm but it took a life of its own since the main character, an old woman with social anxiety, has a lot to deal with. She has to coordinate the defense of her tight knit community when a coloniser invades.
