Naomi Klein and V.V. Ganeshananthan have won the Women's Prize for Nonfiction and the Women's Prize for Fiction, respectively. Klein's "Doppelganger" looks at how online life has distorted reality and is anchored around her experiences of being mistaken for Naomi Wolf, conspiracy theorist and author of "The Beauty Myth." Ganeshananthan's "Brotherless Night" is about an aspiring medic's journey through the brutality of the Sri Lankan civil war. Both authors referenced current international conflicts in their acceptance speeches, with Klein thanking the panel for "not shying away from controversy." She has previously backed calls for festivals to stop taking money from companies with investments in fossil fuels or Israel's defence sector. Here's more from @euronews.

You can read the seminal book "Introduction to VLSI Systems" by Lynn Conway and Carver Mead (1980). They wrote and typeset it with using Xerox PARC technologies such as the Alto computer, the Dover laser printer, and Ethernet as the authors collaborated remotely over the ARPANET at different locations (Conway at PARC where she worked).

Florida school board members supported by Moms for Liberty have banned a book which talks about books that they have banned. Reason? because it talks about book banning and how to push back against it.

No Liberty in #BookBans

Author of #BannedBook "Ban This Book", Alan Gratz said, “It feels like they know exactly what they’re doing and they’re somewhat ashamed of what they’re doing and they don’t want a book on the shelves that calls them out.” #books #bookstodon

Is there a good introductory book to AI / ML which doesn't assume the reader has a degree in maths? It is unfortunately starting to creep into my work so I need to learn what things like 'granular gradient boosting machine algorithm' mean.

"Remember, to the last, that while there is life there is hope."

English novelist and social critic Charles Dickens died #OTD in 1870.

Dickens edited a weekly journal for 20 years; wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and nonfiction articles; lectured and performed readings extensively; was an indefatigable letter writer; and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms.

The #Scifi Book Stores in #Stockholm, #Gothenburg and #Malmö are one of Sweden's most profitable businesses in book retail. They sell tabletop games as well. So at their recent equity issuance I did something unprecedented and bought some stock.

The Stockholm #Scifi Book Store is bang in the middle of the Old Town's main tourist street, where almost every other shop space offers either tacky souvenirs, meals or snacks. Big shop, hundreds of square metres on two floors. It's amazing that they can make that work!

I really wish I had started keeping track of the books I've read beginning when I was around ten or twelve, but sadly, it's just for the last few years that I've done that. But this grandmother did do it and a fascinating list it is too.

“For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.”

Can You Read a Book in a Quarter of an Hour?

The most potent enemy of reading, it goes without saying, is the small, flat box that you carry in your pocket. In terms of addictive properties, it might as well be stuffed with meth. There’s no point in grinding through a whole book—a chewy bunch of words arranged into a narrative or, heaven preserve us, an argument—when you can pick up your iPhone, touch the Times app, skip the news and commentary, head straight to Wordle, and give yourself an instant hit of euphoria and pride by taking just three guesses to reach a triumphant guano.

English self-taught mathematician and physicist Oliver Heaviside was born #OTD in 1850.

He invented a new technique for solving differential equations, independently developed vector calculus, and rewrote Maxwell's equations in the form commonly used today. He significantly shaped the way Maxwell's equations are understood and applied in the decades following Maxwell's death. His practical experience in telegraphy provided a foundation for his later theoretical work.

"Every so often, a cause ignites a sustained fury on college campuses across the nation. In 2020, it was Black Lives Matter. In 2011, it was Occupy Wall Street. In the 1980s, it was apartheid in South Africa.

Today, it’s the Israeli military campaign in Gaza."

Here are five books that shine light on a rich history of campus protests in the US that goes back to the 1960s – compiled by veteran journalist Steve Friess.

"If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,

I shall not live in vain."

American lyric poet Emily Dickinson died #OTD in 1888. Although she wrote 1789 poems, only a few of them were published in her lifetime, all anonymously, and some perhaps without her knowledge.
