That's a great question - I imagine they would want "their say" in the matter - so certainly would not surprise me.
But that's something I'll need to look into - as I'm also curious.
I do know #System76 (centered in Colorado) spoke to a co-author of the Colorado #AgeVerification bill, w/hopes of getting open source software exempted (unsure if happening).

Apparently, Meta helped lobbying efforts, age verification into operating systems through an entity called "Digital Childhood Alliance":
Essentially, can act to transfer some liability, from social media platforms, into operating systems (even volunteer based developers forced to work for free)
Hence requiring 'age signaling' to app requirement on operating systems.

@SalemsLot Hahahaha. Seriously? You decided to use a distribution made by Big Tech containing tons of anti-freedom software (including Snap, based 100% on Canonical's commercial, proprietary, corporate-controlled, monolithic "app store"), and now you want to get rid of it because its upstream added an optional field to a JSON file 🤣😂🤦🤦🤦.
Ooooh, this world is such a circus.
Wait, those open source heroes in the Linux world who valiantly sell enterprise software and provide the infrastructure for surveillance capitalism are preemptively complying with fascism?
Why, say it ain’t so!
A redditor (Ok_Lingonberry3296) traced $2 billion in nonprofit grants and lobbying records across 45 states to figure out who's behind the age verification bills.
The answer is Meta - a company that profits from your data writing laws that collect more of it.

"We’ve been saying this for years now, and we’re going to keep saying it until the message finally sinks in: mandatory age verification creates massive, centralized honeypots of sensitive biometric data that will inevitably be breached. Every single time. And every single time it happens, the politicians who mandated these systems and the companies that built them act shocked—shocked!—that collecting enormous databases of government IDs, facial scans, and biometric data from millions of people turns out to be a security nightmare."

“This broad amendment takes power away from [UK] parliament and Ofcom and hands it to ministers. The consequence of this would be every adult having to provide their personal data, or use their body and biometric features as a key to unlock the Internet."
It doesn't address the structural causes of online harms and can be used to restrict content ideologically.

🚨 Wide ranging powers to restrict Internet access in the UK have been voted through 🚨
Ministers will be able to impose digital ID checks, curfews and VPN restrictions without Parliamentary scrutiny.
This can be used on websites, social media, apps and games with no need to show there's any harm to children.

Digital ID checks ransom our access to information.
We’re forced to splurge our sensitive data all over the place, eroding our freedoms and creating a privacy timebomb.
It’s lose lose.
UK MPs mustn't hand the government unbridled powers over all Internet services in today's vote.

“When you create a law, you have to think about what a future government could do with those powers."
Ministers would have unilateral powers to lock what they see as 'harmful' behind digital ID checks.
This could end up being used on LGBTQ+ and reproductive health content.

UK eyes sweeping powers to regulate tech without parliamentary scrutiny
The U.K. government has laid two amendments that would let it sidestep parliamentary debate so it can update online safety laws.Mizy Clifton (POLITICO)
New powers would let Ministers pick and choose what should be restricted, as well as impose curfews on access.
All without having to prove sites are harmful for children.
They don’t just cover social media, but all 'Internet services’ – blogs, websites, online games and more.
This is overreach.

All adults would have to do a digital ID check to establish their age with third-parties so they can access any service.
If you don't, you could face blocks or time restricted curfews.
These powers could be used by any government in the UK to restrict access to almost any online service you could imagine.

This is no longer about banning under-16s from social media.
It’s about control over all information and forcing adults to go through digital ID checks to access the Internet.

"Every single time you mandate #ageverification, you are mandating the creation of a centralized database of extraordinarily sensitive personal information. Government IDs. #Biometric facial data. The kind of data that, once breached, cannot be “changed” like a password. You get one face. You get one #government ID number. When those leak—and they will leak—the damage is permanent."
