NEW: #Texas lawmakers quietly rejected a proof of citizenship bill for voter registration in a surprise move for the deep-red state. Advocates say Republican lawmakers backed off when they realized it could disenfranchise their own voters.

This was never about “protecting” college seats for US citizens. It has always been about fear—about sending a chilling message to undocumented youth that they are not welcome, no matter how long they’ve lived here, or how much they’ve already given back.

“A #Texas hospital that repeatedly sent a woman who was bleeding and in pain home without ending her nonviable, life-threatening pregnancy violated the law, according to a newly released federal investigation.”

There were two approaches to dealing with the outbreak of measles that spread through the rural community of Gaines County, Texas earlier this year. Dr. Ben Edwards — himself sick with the virus — handed out cod liver oil and prescribed inhalers, neither of which can prevent or cure measles. Meanwhile the waiting room at the only hospital in Seminole, the county's largest town, was virtually empty. On one recent weekday, just four people had come by Gaines County's free vaccine clinic. NBC's Brandy Zadrozny reports on the spread of misinformation, a child's death that brought anti-vaccine activists to town, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s involvement, and the situation now that the outbreak has run its course.

#Texas is controlled by revanchist evangelical neo-nazis, the governor legalized murder there as long as the murderer is a neo-nazi, a rolling Klan rally in 2020 forced a Democratic Party campaign bus off the interstate with the assistance of local cops and exactly zero people were prosecuted or in any way held accountable for it, and cops didn't do jack shit about a two-year terror campaign that led to Jonathan Joss's murder because, in Texas, absolute fucking horror is legal and encouraged.

“She Got an Abortion. So A Texas Cop Used 83,000 Cameras to Track Her Down.”

eff.org/deeplinks/2025/05/she-…

"The officer searched 6,809 different camera networks […] including states where abortion access is protected by law, such as Washington and Illinois. The search record listed the reason plainly: “had an abortion, search for female.””

”had an abortion, search for female” is sickening.

Jfc. Texas is a misogynist hellscape

“While this particular data point explicitly mentioned an abortion, scores of others in the audit logs released through public records requests simply list "investigation" as the reason for the plate search, with no indication of the alleged offense. That means other searches targeting someone for abortion, or another protected right in that jurisdiction, could be effectively invisible.

“This case underscores our growing concern: that the mass surveillance infrastructure—originally sold as a tool to find stolen cars or missing persons—is now being used to target people seeking reproductive healthcare. This unchecked, warrant-less access that allows law enforcement to surveil across state lines blurs the line between “protection” and persecution.”

Instead of suing the indiv. plaintiff—which rarely works—target the law’s structure. A const. challenge citing “chilling effect” on rights (e.g. privacy, travel) is possible. Anti-SLAPP laws in some states help if the suit aims 2 intimidate. In court, use counterclaims 2 defend your rights directly. Goal: delegitimize the system, not the person.

New from Michelle Pitcher: “Bills in this package are going to swell the Texas pretrial population. That’s going to impact counties first.
