I played a part in a biology experiment 😃

A student placed European dung beetles in a circular arena in the URANIA-Planetarium in Potsdam, and recorded the paths they walked under four different light conditions (no stars, stars, stars + Milky Way, and the previous condition with an additional lamp). It's to some extent a replication of Marie Dacke's famous paper, but with a different species of dung beetle (that doesn't roll dung balls).

#Antarctica

Antarctica, long considered a remote and isolated region, is now showing signs of emerging diseases. Migratory birds and rising temperatures are introducing pathogens into previously untouched ecosystems. This study highlights the spread of H5N1 bird flu among seals and other animals. It underscores the urgent need for monitoring and early-warning systems to protect wildlife

I love how delightfully diabolical evolution can be.

A new article in Annual Review of Entomology is about the plant pathogens that are vectored between plants by herbivorous insects. These plant pathogens invade plant tissues and make plants sick. To get between plants they hitch a ride inside plant-feeding insects. The healthier the insect the more plants it will feed on.

So, what do the microbes do? They manufacture chemicals that make their insect hosts stronger. Several ways that they do this have been discovered "from balancing a nutritionally deficient diet" to "upgrading its defensive biochemistry against natural enemies."

I'm one of the crazy people in France who don't heat his #home.

Just removes humidity. Can't afford heating, but I have all stuff to stay warm (clothing, etc)
It can go below 10°C

I know the techniques to sleep with -5°C : goose down #blanket, #wool hat, wool gloves, wool socks
And breath strongly at morning when dressing good clothes!

But in Gaza they don't have all this useful things now. It's an emergency to help them
