@molly0xfff is a leading cryptocurrency critic, but get to know her and you’ll see she’s anything but cynical about the future of the web. Hear why this researcher, writer and software engineer thinks so in this fascinating conversation with @mike:

People have email addresses like me@mydomain.com while also having a website at mydomain.com. What's preventing folks from also having a #SocialWeb account using me@mydomain.com? Would it just be confusing? Then there's all the different fedi services.

What would you do if the Fediverse/ActivityPub were to suddenly disappear?

  • I would go to Threads (6%, 12 votes)
  • I’d go to Twitter/X (2%, 4 votes)
  • I would code a new one (14%, 26 votes)
  • I’d go to Bluesky/build on ATProto (18%, 32 votes)
  • Nostr or Farcaster (1%, 3 votes)
  • Like an asteroid would hit earth? Like water would not be wet? Not possible (56%, 98 votes)
175 voters. Poll end: in 3 weeks

The vibes on Threads have been shifted. The For you feed brings up negative and controversial posts. Unsurpisingly no such negativity exists on my chronological feeds on Mastodon.

People still can’t wrap their minds around the fact that the social networks in the Fediverse do not need excessive investor money to thrive.

#Fediverse #Mastodon #SocialWeb #ActivityPub

It feels so totally random who on #threads chooses to turn on fedi sharing and who doesn't. #SocialWeb

Former CEO of Twitter wanted to build a social protocol no-one can control, like SMTP or HTTP for social media. Bluesky’s ATProto was supposed to be an open source protocol that Twitter could eventually utilize, but then Musk happened and Bluesky started taking it to the wrong direction and everything fell apart in Dorsey’s mind.

A very revealing interview. I now see even more future in W3C’s ActivityPub.

We can now connect to #BlueSky accounts from here, but both sides need to enable it.

We're supposed to be opt-out folks, but too many "safety" advocates are stopping the #SocialWeb from ever becoming ubiquitous. Imagine being so scared of "bad" speech that you demand users and server admins add each other's domain to their settings before they could communicate or even browse to those sites. We'd all still be on AOL.

Thank you @snarfed.org.

like you said, the #SocialWeb won't become as ubiquitous as email if our default is opt-in. because most people won't understand the settings etc.

we need an explicitly pro connection but anti intentional harassment federation policy (that I think would be very popular). instead the default is becoming having a network where nobody can stumble on anything upsetting. that's not the open web.

deal with spam, don't limit browsing.

@briankrebs

the cool kids are using fedi but then #SocialWeb. thanks for sticking around.
