Controversial opinion time…

The price of an ebook prices should equal the price of the paperback less the production, shipping, and handling costs.

Any publisher that charges as much (or more) for an ebook as a paperback is telling ebook-readers that we don't matter. They're taking the piss.

Many people have told me how they like to read the opening few paragraphs of books before buying.

So, here is the opening to mine, 'Drystone - A Life Rebuilt' which will be available for pre-order early 2025 and then released in August.

I'm a first time author, so shares mean a lot and I'd genuinely love to hear your thoughts.

I'd like my reading list for next year to include more indie authors (instead of just reading the whole Discworld series on a loop like I usually do), and my fave genre is sci-fi.

So, I'm betting Fedi has quite the treasure trove of indie sci-fi authors, please say hello and tell me where I can find your books! Or if you're not an author, recommendations of people to check out obviously very welcome too.

Thanks!

(Boosts welcome & appreciated ♥️)

Sjukt passande att veckans reading challenge är ”Sapphics in Space” och släpps just idag. Ser för övrigt ett flertal bra böcker på listan och även några som jag avser läsa. Dessa har jag läst och gillat:

No shelter but the stars
The Lily and the Crown
The Caphenon
Dancing in the Darkness

Dorothy Alison's “Bastard Out of Carolina” stands apart from the "poornography" genre—stories about poverty written by outsiders, according to University of Chicago English professor Leonard Davis.

Allison, who passed away on November 5, drew deeply from her own impoverished childhood to create a raw, authentic world that never lost its gritty roots.

Finished Asylum (2024) by Una McCormack and I loved it! The novel is about an alien species’ struggles that affect Una and Pike at Starfleet Academy and on the Enterprise.

I usually love anything having to do with the Academy and that part of this story in 2233 is no exception. It’s wonderful to see Una in her senior year and Pike as an Ensign guest lecturer. 1/5 #StarTrekSNW #StarTrek #bookstodon

59% of banned books in the 2021-22 school year were children’s books featuring diverse characters or nonfiction books about historical figures, according to a new study. Authors of color wrote 39% of the books even though authors of color make up just 10% of U.S. authors. @bookstodon #Bookstodon #books #education

Seven Stories Press has been giving away a FREE ebook for 7 days. The free one today is called Full Spectrum Resistance, Volume 1, Building Movements and Fighting to Win.
From the site: "The radical left is losing, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Here is the radical’s guide to activist work—the manual we need at this crucial moment to organize for universal human rights, a habitable earth, and a more egalitarian society."

One of the authors I follow, @clacksee, has made two of her #books free for today.

For some light-hearted #SciFi with plenty of hope, there's The Left Hand of Dog: whitehartfiction.co.uk/product…

If you'd rather read about old ladies getting justice by any means necessary, there's A Bit of Murder Between Friends: whitehartfiction.co.uk/product…

I can highly recommend both.

EU readers should use her Payhip shop: payhip.whitehartfiction.co.uk

Haymarket has made ten of its books--an #antifascist library--free* this week.

And any other ebook is just 2 dollars until Nov 15th!

Get amongst it.

*in exchange for creating an account with an email address.

I've read Freedom is a Constant Struggle and it's so good it should be part of the high school curriculum, in my opinion.

“Not only does the course offer an unexpected approach to academic reading, but it also offers a way to make sense of some of the craziness of the world.” By University of Tennessee lecturer Sally Harris on her new course: “Whodunit?: Detective Stories” @bookstodon #Bookstodon

Found via Reddit. Apparently there's an upcoming book in Polish collecting letters exchanged between Ursula K. LeGuin and Stanisław Lem. Not sure if there'll be an English edition at some point, but I certainly hope so!

📌 📚 In the ongoing effort to give eyeballs options besides election doom-scrolling (😬 🤦‍♀️) may I say I am (still) incredibly proud of a former student! She is killing it with her recent book. #Writers, DON'T EVER GIVE UP. This #autistic author was never "supposed" to be able to read a book--forget writing one. 💜 Now she's at the very top of the category: "Teaching Students with Developmental & Intellectual Disabilities."

Where to Buy Books Other than Amazon

A few years back I had a habit of every six months or so doing a thread on Fedi about options for getting books other than Amazon. Eventually it finally occurred to me that I could write it once, put it up on website, and update as needed, rather than constantly reinventing the wheel.

Here’s the updated version for the new site.

It's getting late, so the #FediBookFair is almost over for me.

As a final reminder, you can see details of all my books at my website: RussellPhillips.uk

I don't sell print books direct, but if you'd like a signed copy of any of my books, DM or email me.

Katie Mack: "The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking)"

I'm not reading physics & astro pop sci books often (I love other subjects, just not my own!), so it took ages until I came around to this one.

It's an absolute joy.

Which may seem a strange thing to say about a book on how the universe will end, but it seriously is. Clearly written, cutting edge science, to the point, in a fun voice (+ sounds bites from @freyablekman). Recommended.

From Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” to Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” to H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Dunwich Horror”, whip-poor-wills have often been a dark omen that haunted classic American #horror #fiction.

But as the birds’ populations have declined by a horrifying 70%, they’re also seeing a near-extinction in books and movies:
