"Overall, we are pretty much like Russia now, only it isn't official yet with us. That may actually be worse, because if it were official, at least we'd be able to fight it," says Adar Shafran ("Running on Sand"), the director and head of the Israeli Producers Association. "When they want to submit a film to a festival, the Russians are told in advance not to do so. We aren't told that – our films simply aren't accepted."

A decade ago, the North Macedonian government embarked on a controversial "antiquization" project in which they built 136 structures across capital city Skopje. These included replicas of the Arc de Triomphe and the White House, a statue of Mother Theresa, and a bronze sculpture of the country's most famous son, Alexander the Great, raising his middle finger towards Greece. Now, many of those structures are cracking and falling apart. Fodor's takes a look at why this building project took place, and what locals think of it now.
