Finally sitting down to watch/listen to the podcast with Mike Mccue, CEO of Flipboard, and Ryan Barrett, creator of BridgyFed.

This should be good!😁

So cool to see the leaders in this space share info and help each other make this the best social media project it could be! 1/?

Ryan made a pretty good point around the 16 minute mark about how Threads wasn't told to make their federation "opt-in" from the Fediverse side and that people feel differently about bridges for some reason.

Even though, they're the same thing, in most ways. 2/?

in reply to BeAware :veriweed:

In fact people were upset that Threads made federation opt-in.
in reply to damon

@damon on the Threads side, yes. but on Fediverse, it's opt-out. That's what he's referring to.
in reply to BeAware :veriweed:

So, at the 29 minute mark, Ryan talks about how Mastodon's search discoverability feature is currently opt-in and there's only 5-6% of people currently opting-in. That's a wild statistic!😬 3/?

This video is SO good! Anyone who is interested in Fediverse nuances and the issues we've been debating for months now, should definitely watch this video! 4/?

Alright fine, I'll give it a watch while I work on this network diagnostic tool.

BeAware :veriweed: reshared this.

@cdp1337 I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did.👍

I'd be interested in hearing your opinion afterwards if you wouldn't mind spending the time!

in reply to Charlie

@cdp1337 🤷‍♂️ you're just much more negative about the platform in general, it seems. Your opinions are yours friend. They don't bother me and obviously you have a right to have them.

For the Bridge issue, though. It's not like Ryan is working for BlueSky and can make the choice to use ActivityPub on the platform or not. He's doing it BECAUSE he doesn't have that choice, he doesn't work for anyone. He's doing it so he can follow users there. Which is the goal of the ActivityPub protocol in the first place, so that's how he's using it.

in reply to BeAware :veriweed:

Yeah, I don't have an issue that he's making a bridge or how that bridge handles opt-in / opt-out; I have an issue that he needs to make a bridge in the first place.

Bluesky should have implemented ActivityPub when they rolled out federation. THEIR software should handle .....

OH, wait.... does Bluesky just not _want_ to federate or something?

in reply to Charlie

@cdp1337 probably not. So fuck them, we're making them. :kek: it's opt-in right now anyway, so even if there was some "care" about if they consent, they currently have to. But personally, I don't give a fuck, they should federate because I shouldn't have to go to another platform to follow someone.

They have this claim over there of decentralization, but they quite literally have no such thing. They have "federation" if you wanna call it that. The only thing they're "federating" though, are user accounts, from what I can tell. Posts and other "content" are centralized.

in reply to BeAware :veriweed:

..... yeah, that's fucking useless. That's just twitter with a reskin.

But from a corporation standpoint, that move makes sense. Why allow users the freedom to choose where they reside? You are just losing market share (and thus losing stock valuation, which we all know is the only thing most corporations give a fuck about).

in reply to Charlie

@cdp1337 it's a legal thing. They fear for monopoly lawsuits. Same with threads I feel.
in reply to BeAware :veriweed:

well to be fair many people might be shouting for threads to be opt-in if Meta had not chosen to make it so anyway and also the anti-threads energy was channeled more into demands of a complete fediblock
in reply to vetehinen

@vetehinen it's not opt in from our side. We have to opt out to federating with Threads by blocking them🤔
in reply to BeAware :veriweed:

Threads only pushes to the fediverse and doesn't take anything in right now so there is nothing to opt-in to for us currently. It's true they might not start asking even when this becomes bidirectional but not sure. I hope they won't make it opt-in tbh.

But when it comes to how it works now I don't see the difference between Threads and this Bluesky bridge. Just like you can run into posts from Threads without having followed any Threads account you can still run into posts from Bluesky here despite not having opted in to the Bridgy fed bridge.

in reply to vetehinen

@vetehinen no, no you cannot unless someone boosts it. They're literally hidden profiles unless you specifically search for them.
