Had an excellent moth trap at Bath City Farm yesterday. I'll post photos of the moths tomorrow, but first here's some of the non-moths we caught. Most excitingly, a Bombardier Beetle, the first time I've ever seen one! This uncommon beetle famously ejects a noxious spray around 100 degrees C as a defensive mechanism. Also found Acorn Weevil, Birch Shieldbug & Red-legged Shieldbug

This Luna moth waited for the sun to warm her wings on a curb in a parking lot early this morning. I’m very lucky to have seen her because a Luna moth lifespan is only a week to 10 days. #moth #moths #nature #insects #wildlife

European #hornet - Vespa crabro - PT "vespão"

These gentle #insects have had various nests around the land since I've been here. Their biggest regular until the last wildfire was 3m up in a hole in a cork oak over a path. Their volume of their fanning outside was a reassuring weather-temperature-check hum to me every time I walked under. They're working up there, but not restored yet, I think -- no humming yet.

But every time I walk past this old oak post, 30 cm from my face on a main path, I see and hear them collecting rotten wood fibre from it for their constructions. They've etched out the softer areas. Sometimes one will leap off and fly a loop around me to see what I am, but never are they aggressive there...

Other years and places when I've come too close to a low-level nest, they still don't sting or land, but get pretty loud and fast "buzzing" me.

Beaut beetle which I noticed flying and which then landed in the grass at my feet. Managed to get some reasonable shots as it moved quite slowly and let me get quite close before flying off. Seen at Glen Erin near Bowen, Qld. Canon R10 and RF100-400 lens. Hand held, natural light. ID-ed on iNaturalist as Rhipicera mystacina.
