Amazon has been in the surveillance and data collection and data mining game for most of its years.

They even tried to buy Roomba, which exists to send 3d images of your floor plan back to h.q. under the guise of cleaning.

IOT was never about our convenience. It was always about surveillance.

Do people really not know these things or are they waiting for the bandwagon to feel some kind of way?

None of this is new.

- If you're locked in to Amazon with previous media purchases commit to no additional purchases. No more.
- Otherwise, delete your Amazon account. You can get their stuff elsewhere.
- Stop using Google's browser, search, services. Delete your account if possible.
- Stop using Microsoft's services services. Delete your account if possible.

Commit to getting out of these services. Stop using them, stop giving them your money.

Browsed through #Amazon #Books yesterday to see what the current landscape of #Ubuntu books was. Sorting by publication date, I'm pretty sure most if not all of the new books were #AISlop. Digging into some of the "authors", this became even more obvious. OTOH, books by real authors (e.g. “mastering Ubuntu server”) have not been updated since 2022.
Let's support real tech publishers like @mwl nostarch.com but also more philosophical authors in our bubble like @pluralistic - otherwise the self-digesting heaps of silicone from moltbook will push us into intellectual slavery.

So if you were wondering why Bezos was willing to sink $75 million into the melaina "I am eva braun" movie here is what $75 million get you

It saved Amazon 9 BILLION dollars this year alone

"Republicans’ tax cuts shaved billions off Amazon’s tax bill, new government filings show.

The company says it ran a $1.2 billion tax bill last year, down from $9 billion the previous year, and even as its profits jumped by 45 percent to nearly $90 billion."

Let that sink in: They Paid 1.2 billion ON 90 BILLION in profit THAT IS A TAX RATE of 1.3%

Anyone have any recommendations on how to obtain a copy of the book without going through Amazon?

Well done, Neil Young!

The relentless layoffs at #Amazon continues.

Another 14,000 corporate jobs (10% of the workforce) is slated to be cut, after they’ve already cut 14,000 corporate jobs last October.

#Amazon: "rent this movie for $ or buy it for $$"

They know that they are not selling you a movie you keep, just a movie that you rent for a longer time.

This is #deceptive but it's also #profitable.

Why Subscriptions Make Everything More Expensive

#Subscription services exist for nearly everything consumers buy. Many, like #Netflix or #Spotify, start out affordable, but the cost adds up over time. And while signing up is effortless, cancelling can be difficult.

Companies such as #Adobe and #Amazon have even been accused by the Federal Trade Commission of using dark patterns to trap consumers in subscriptions.

#Amazon has started generating product listings for companies that don't sell on Amazon, without their permission or knowledge: modernretail.co/technology/bra… "Buy For Me" links activate an #AI agent that attempts to buy the product through the retailer's actual storefront. The listings are AI generated and error-prone. Some allow customers to place orders for items that are no longer available. Companies are having to assure their suppliers that they haven't violated contractual agreements against selling on Amazon.

Jeff Bezos is saying the quiet part out loud. They want to kill local computing.

You will own nothing and be happy. You will rent your computing power from the cloud. You pay a subscription for the privilege of using a computer.

AI demand is artificially spiking DRAM prices and Big Tech is pushing "AI PCs," the squeeze is on to force us into a rental model.

Reject this future. :NoAI:

Keep your hardware local.

Run #Linux. :tux:

Own your data.

The "cloud" is just a landlord for your data.
