Organ Pipes

Early March, an accumulation of massive icicles bathed by spray and covered in snow.

A heavy snowstorm has just passed, and Gullfoss - the "Golden Falls" - is heavily iced. Fed by Langjökull glacier, Hvítá - "White River" - plunges 11 metres (36 ft) over rocks to a central platform area before dropping another 21m (69ft) into a chasm.
This structure was on the eastern bank of the top cascade.

Skylight

Patiently we waited in the cold and blustery darkness, hoping that the clouds didn't increase, hoping that the forecast was accurate, hoping that we were lucky.
The green lady didn't disappoint us.

Sunbeams

A dreary July day in the south-east of #Iceland. It's been drizzling and raining and, at 19:30 as the sun was going down, some small breaks appeared in the clouds.

What seemed to be a fruitless day for photography was crowned by a lovely display of sunbeams, highlighting Vatnajökull and its glacier tongues, and piercing the ground level mists gathering around the peaks.

Flat Calm

The summer sky reflects in the near-mirror surface of the fjord. The soft breeze gently ruffles a few patches, but the water-birds are unperturbed.

Snow Mountain Sunset

Mid-November, and by 16:30 the sun has set. The fading light splashes strong colour across the sky and reduces the shadows to shades of dark blue.

'Neath Clouds And Northern Lights

On a windy February night, we waited for the skies to clear and the show to begin.
The farm buildings of Grenivík provided some small ground level lights, while the stars danced a duet with the #aurora. Even the approaching snow clouds couldn't hide the beauty completely.

Clutter

Remnants of icebergs floating near the shore of the lake.

These exquisitely carved slivers of ice once fell as snowflakes,
which piled up atop a mountain,
which then became part of a glacier,
which calved into the water,
which the tides and the winds grounded here,
where it began to melt slowly
for me to find.

Diagonal

Strong sunlight cuts through the spray from a 14m/42.5ft drop, as the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river begins to bite deeper into Jökulsárgljúfur canyon.

This lovely horseshoe extends ≈ 200m/656ft from the initial plunge to the last drop from the top of the rocks and into the river.

From The Plane

On an extraordinarily clear November day, we flew from Reykjavik in the west to Akureyri in the north of #Iceland.

¹6,500m above Langjökull, the ²1,400m mesa of Hrútfellsjökull looks like a fried egg. This dome will eventually feed the glacier tongues like the one at the bottom of the shot, which is actually west of the peak. There's a river winding through the snowfield on the lower right.

Moon In The Morning

"But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?
It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.
Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,
Who is already sick and pale with grief,
That thou her maid art far more fair than she"
- #ShakespeareSunday, Romeo and Juliet

First Kiss

Early November, and the sun is rising at 09:45 in Húsavík on the north-eastern coast of #Iceland.

On the opposite side of Skjálfandi bay, the snowy east-facing Víknafjöll mountain range is collecting the first rays of dawn.

Overtaken

Travelling down the coast, we realised that we were being caught by a fog bank approaching rapidly from behind us. We parked in a lay-by and saw that the mist and cloud had already begun to shroud the coastline ahead, and we were in a pincer movement. We waited until the clouds were overhead and overtaking us to take this shot.

Tongue Stuck Out

A glacial tongue of Vatnajökull and one of the most captivating places we've visited. A foggy day like this just increases the otherworldly beauty.

Svínafellsjökull in Skaftafell Nature Reserve, SE #Iceland. The dark patch on top of the ice on the opposite side is a landslip. Access to the sides has now been limited due to the shrinking glacier moving away from the edges and leaving them dangerously unsupported.

Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS)

Taken at roughly 7:30 last night, this comet showed a lovely tail and, for once, the weather was kind to us. It was a bit chilly, though!

The comet is just above the lower cloud bank, fortunately it stayed visible long enough for us to get a few good shots.

It’s absurd to go to the Louvre just to "see" Mona Lisa. You can’t even get close enough to properly see it. She smiles mysteriously because she has to look at you buffoons (and I), day in and day out, packed like sardines to take a blurry and meaningless photo "with" her, or to zoom in so much on your poor little phone camera to take a "close-up" photo of her, the result of which easily renders Leonardo da Vinci the greatest 15th-century pixel artist. So here I present to you, the only exhibition happening in the room, the absurdity, the humanity: Mona Lisa.
