A gloriously beautiful fly that looks a bit like a bee on white flowers with green foliage in the background. The fly has a plump body with sunflower yellow and black stripes and big black eyes and thick blunt antennae in the shape of a V on its head. The thorax is mostly black with yellow stripes going in the opposite direction. Its two wings are resting closed together and are translucent reddish brown. The legs are long, thin and reddish towards the tarsi and yellow near the abdomen. The flowers are clustered very close together on a stalk and have thin white petals that seem haphazardly arranged, green stamens, long thin filaments and yellow anthers. There are small leaflets poking out from under the flower cluster.

The eyes are an opaque matte black and look like a bikini top on its head. The rest of the head is sunflower yellow with a long black stripe in the center. It has a black tongue sticking into the flower. The thorax is mostly black with two pairs of short yellow stripes. Its two wings are resting closed together and are translucent reddish brown. The legs are long, thin and reddish towards the tarsi and yellow near the abdomen. The flowers are closely packed together on a stem with thin white petals looking like they’re barely hanging on to the green star-shaped cup center.

This isn't one of my best captures—limitations of smartphone photography—but I'm sharing because I'd like to know if anyone else has seen something like this. Note that almost every limb of the subject tree is wavy. None of the tree's neighbors, all the same type of tree, had wavy branches like that. Knowing what I know about how trees grow, I can only guess that the shape of this tree's branches had something to do with the quality of light it was receiving as those limbs grew: how much light, the pattern of light and shadows cast by neighbors, etc. Any science hippies here in the Federation have any further insight to impart?
