This is a night time, grungy, black and white photo in landscape format looking along a wooden pier lined with street lights that converge into the distance. The Embarcadero, San Francisco (2012).

The camera is about half a metre above the weathered and rough wooden planks that lay at right angles to the lens. The lighting above exaggerates the knurled and uneven texture of the well worn wooden surface. At the edges of the pier are two parallel rows of ornate, black metal railings. Spaced every three or four metres are dark metal street lights that are about three or so metres tall. Each street light is topped with a lantern that radiates outwards eight petal-like rays. Arranged along the edges are numerous park benches plus the odd large litter bin. Both the railings and street lights while in reality are parallel: in the image converge together with increasing distance. Above and to the sides of the scene is a pitch black and featureless sky.

Failing to capture auroras, I captured the taillights of passing trucks instead.

Nighttime long-exposure photo of red and yellow light streaks from the taillights of a passing truck, on a road by the Brooklyn waterfront. Through the streaks we can see glowing streetlights and a glimpse of the lit-up windows of the lower Manhattan skyline. At right are the leafless branches of a tree and above is a clear sky, deep blue in the early evening.

A black and white, wide-angle night photograph depicting the monumental Hōzōmon Gate, leading to the Sensō-ji Temple in the Asakusa district of Tokyo. The structure features an intricate, multi-tiered roof design with traditional ornaments and brackets, which are dramatically illuminated against the dark sky. Three large chōchin lanterns hang in the lower part of the gate – the central one is the largest, flanked by two smaller ones. Behind the grilles in the side niches, statues of the Niō guardian deities are visible. The ground-level perspective emphasizes the massive scale of the architecture, while the wet pavement of the square in front of the gate subtly reflects the light, giving the scene a cinematic and solemn character.
