For Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we want to recognize the work being done on accessibility by @matt as part of the @gnome Foundation. He is the lead for @accesskit and is currently working on Newton, a Wayland-oriented solution for assistive technologies that can modernize accessibility on the Linux desktop!

Well, happy #GlobalAccessibilityAwarenessDay!
While my original proposal to hide images in order to highlight the importance of well-written alt text did not gain a whole lot of traction, I'm still glad there was some conversation, and grateful to everyone who is still interested in joining in.
If you do participate, I would love to hear from you!

Highlighting the importance of well-written image descriptionsStefan Bohacek (stefanbohacek.com)
Article on a11y in #k12 and #HigherEd web content. Too often places don't think about it until they have a student with a11y needs, and then it is like "oh, how do we do that?" (or, worse, "do we really need to do that for just one student?")
Quote from UNM prof: “Spending your whole life advocating for yourself” to get accessible materials is “demoralizing and draining and inappropriate,”
A11y should be built in, not added after needed.

Got very excited by @matt demo of AccessKit integration in #GTK
AccessKit is a cross-platform abstraction for accessibility infrastructure written in Rust.
His work will bring a11y support for GTK on macOS and Windows as well as for the new accessibility architecture on Linux code-named "Newton".

Week 7. In this weeknote, I mentioned the @eleventy conference, linked to a post by @JonathanMosen about the Sonos app update, and included other miscellaneous points.
Sonos App Redesign AMA
Hey everyone! We have some exciting news to share with you all.Today is when the new app update with the new design is released, and will be rolled out to all of you during the next few days.en.community.sonos.com
Manyfold v0.65.0 has been released! This release is all about #Accessibility, after our audit last week. There's a big pile of improvements around screen reading, keyboard navigation, colour, labelling, and so on, which will benefit everyone! More to come, too!
It's been great to be able to get some expert advice and then put time into this, thanks to NLNet and @NGIZero. It's a rare opportunity in open source!

Release v0.65.0
This release is all about improving accessibility after a recent audit. No new features as such, but if you’re a screen reader or keyboard user you should find the site much easier to use.Manyfold
Likewise, I don't think about describing or transcribing everything that's in a picture, rather, explaining the point of the picture, and why I'm sharing it.
It adds a extra button on the update video page, and can do most of what you find in other tools, like visualize audio, basic formatting, and makes it easy to switch language.
The goal is that it should be "good enough" for most who just want to add subtitles/captions, but don't want to spend time finding and downloading dedicated software for this.
Instance administrators can install it via the plugin page.

Hi friends,
The http://alt-text.org alt text library project needs a new leader, I have brain cancer.
I built a working, scalable, proof of concept library of shared alt text with fuzzy matching.
I'd like to connect with the #accessibility dev community. I want to hand the project off to a team or a leader if anyone is willing to take it over.

Boosts appreciated
A few extra seconds of your time it takes to add a good image description can really improve someone's day.
"To a totally blind person like me it means a lot to have a picture in my mind of your images, especially the animal pics."
"I don't know what it is, but as a blind user it's making me emotional to be able to actually interact with content."

What is alt text? Alternative text (or alt text, in short) is the text you can use to describe an image when you publish it on your website or social media.Alt Text Hall of Fame
It's also true that many #hacking tools, platforms, courses etc. could use some help in the #accessibility department. It's a neverending vicious circle.
Enter my new twitch channel, IC_null. On this channel, I will be streaming #programming and #hacking content including THM, HTB and who knows what else, from the perspective of a #screenReader user.
What I need, is an audience. If this is something you reckon you or anybody you know might be interested in, drop the channel a follow or share this post. Gimme that #infoSec Mastodon sense of comradery and help me out to make this idea an actual thing :) https://twitch.tv/ic_null #tryHackMe #streamer #selfPromo

Congratulations. Does it have a fully functional screen reader?
