It seems there's an entire history of Glasgow which no one never knew existed until someone starts putting up plaques about it. And once there are plaques, it must be real, right? This one is in by the abandoned railway station in the city's Botanic Gardens, and there are about a dozen similar Glaikit plaques in all.at various points around the city.

The photo focuses on the trees, evergreen & deciduous, & a building in the distance, all of which make up the horizon-line in frame. The building is a red-brick structure, called a tenement here in Glasgow, yet simply referring to a building that houses apartments, & not using the word with the negative connotation the word has in New York City, stemming from the years of elevated immigration, where a tenement means an apartment but intrinsically also implies one into which too many people are living. This Glasgow tenement is the red-brick kind, though beige sandstone tenements also exist. Above the trees & brick structure is an early-Winter sky, pale-grey in a poetic way. The air is foggy, & flying through the air, just above the deciduous tree, can be seen a lone seagull. Despite the evident chill in the air, the photo has a cosy & calm quality to the moment.

The sunlight is that which is being reflected off of a windowpane outside the apartment & across the street. This double reflection of Sun to outdoor windowpane to wall creates a final image on the wall that has a quality of a double-exposure, as though two images are superimposed, one on top of the other. The light coming into the room is mid-afternoon light, but the wintry time of year means this light is darker in value & has a significantly yellow glow to it, almost orange. The contrast to the ambient blueish light inside the room makes the sunlight appear even warmer on the wall. To the left of the bright rectangular shape is a sprig of thyme, now dried & left pinned to the wall for good vibes. The overall moment of the photo is high-contrast in feel, dark & light, quiet & loud. Yet, the sum of the parts of these contrasts yields a moment that is unexpectedly calm, content, & cosy.

Work on proofing my upcoming Gushet Buildings of Glasgow 2025 Calendar is almost complete, but there have been a few interuptions from someone who feels I'm paying too much attention to buildings and not enough attention to her. The finished calendar should be available to order by the end of the week. It will be in full colour, but without the dog in the middle of it!

The tower of the former Park Church in the West End of Glasgow. Designed by J.T. Rochead in a Gothic style, this church was built in 1858. The rest of the church was dismantled in 1968 and was replaced by a reinforced concrete office block constructed for the Bank of Scotland.
