TIL: Big Tech data centers report their water consumption, but they only count what's used inside the building (server cooling). The much larger water footprint happens at the power plants generating their electricity - and it's almost never reported.
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab found US data centers' indirect water use is historically 12x their direct use. Meta's own numbers show a 20:1 ratio. Google's is 3:1.
The result: companies can claim to be 'water positive' while their total water footprint keeps growing. Nvidia recently showed off a closed-loop cooling that eliminates on-site water use, but even their sustainability chief admitted: solve the water inside the data center and the footprint moves to the power plant.
One large data center can use 5 million gallons/day (equivalent to a town of 50,000 people), and they cluster in already water-stressed regions.
