I really don't understand this sudden groundswell of support for #BlueSky.
It's just "X-Lite": a closed system run by a rich guy who sets his own rules.

"#Bluesky and #ATProto are not meaningfully decentralized, and are not federated either.
However, this is not to say that Bluesky is not achieving something useful; while Bluesky is not building what is presently a decentralized Twitter...
...it is building an excellent replacement for Twitter, and Bluesky's main deliverable goal is something else instead: a Twitter replacement, with the possibility of "credible exit"."

I'm going to have to apologize a bit for the BlueSky slander I've been spreading. I did not realize it's actually open source and federated too. It just has its own protocol instead of ActivityPub.
I'm sticking with Mastodon, but I'm a little less upset now about BlueSky's recent prominence
Updated #BlueSky my handle!

Aww yiss. No worries, though. #Mastodon is my primary home. But it's good to diversify. Let's not put our eggs in one basket ever again. :P
(I'm not putting much effort into #Threads though. Already has that corporate stink about it. 🤢)
This bitch be bussing 💯 .
Y'all don't go leaving now 😒
We got fire this bitch up to be the #1 social app.
I looking for mo folks to fw . Follow me to connect. If you just joined. I wanna make mastodon fire 🔥

“I would like to use Bluesky. They've done a bunch of seriously interesting technical work on #moderation and ranking that I truly admire, and I've got lots of friends there who really enjoy it.”
“My rule – I don't join a service that I can't leave without switching costs – is my Ulysses Pact, and it's keeping me #safe from danger I've sailed into too many times before.”
"“We’re building an open-source social network that anyone can take into their own hands and build on, and it’s something that is radically different from anything that’s been done in social media before. Nobody’s been this open, this transparent and put this much control in the users hands.”"
Well, once again, no. ActivityPub and the Fediverse really did this in terms of the users with no companies dictating the terms. What Bluesky is doing is not "radically different" or "put this much control in the users hands". We still can't 100% host our own instances on Bluesky and 90% of the user base is on Bluesky's servers. It did not start with users, it started with the company. Huge difference.
Let's dissect this...
"“The billionaire proof is in the way everything is designed, and so if someone bought or if the Bluesky company went down, everything is open source,” Graber said."
Well, no. Open source tools can still be bring down and we've seen examples of that, where even "open source companies" have been bought and shut down.

Here is a post by @jwildeboer that explains how #bluesky is not decentralized.
TLDR: all traffic is routed through relays. All relays are operated by #bluesky.
There is a diagram included in the post. Yes, you can operate a personal data store at great expense. It's all laid out in the blog post.

My Digital Life After Twitter (G+, Facebook, Instagram etc)
FTR (For The Record): I left Facebook 10+ years ago. I left Instagram 3 years ago. I left Twitter almost 2 years ago. And I always had accounts in what is now known as the Fediverse. I was on identi.ca, status.net, pump.Jan Wildeboer (Jan Wildeboer's Blog)
What they do well: Having Starterpacks helps getting the necessary number of follows up to where it begins to get fun. Its also generally easier to find and follow people, whereas Mastodon made this often very difficult
Two timelines for recommendations and follows don't really work for me, and they largely overlap
2) contains the history of development of these two? Things like, when and why they were created, etc? Thanks in advance! (And thanks for potential boosts that could help this reach the right people)
Likewise, if we do want #bluesky #starterpack - style solutions, what does that mean to #mastodon from a stability perspective?
I noticed @jwz recently, talking about serious performance-related slowdown issues, related to having an account that is VERY popular. So, what does that mean if we create solutions which greatly encourage account popularity, without actually addressing server issues first?
In short, the issue of starter packs isn't just a simple good / bad question.
Well, even though we'd like them to come here, better late than never.. and we'll still be here for them when Bluesky falls!
"I would hate to exclude people who might choose to stay on Twitter,” - for sure, we wouldn't want to deprive the Broligarchs, racists, bigots, fake AI and bots from their daily dose of Neuroscience content!

I don't want to take anything away from Jay Graber. She is an effective leader that has steered her company to massive growth,
But I feel like she needs to work on her elevator pitch for what it means for a system to be "decentralized". Note: no one says the word "federated" in this interview.
Of course, it would be nice if #bluesky was *actually* decentralized. Maybe that is why she struggles with the question?
Friendly reminder, if a cable is cut somewhere in the world, #mastodon will not go down.
Why? Because it is truly decentralized.
The #bluesky marketing doesn't hold up when compared to the facts.

Bluesky apparently acted up today because of a cut fiber cable
Bluesky had some issues earlier today because of a cut fiber cable from an Internet provider, Bluesky says. During the outage, my feeds and notifications were very slow to load on the web and mobile while logged in.Jay Peters (The Verge)
"Decentralised social media is more than just a technical shift; it's a step toward restoring autonomy and trust in our digital lives, empowering individuals and communities to connect without compromising their values or privacy."
A study by the Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford finds that decentralised social media leads to citizen empowerment.

Interesting to see Bluesky reporting huge increases in moderation reports including harassment, CSAM etc https://bsky.app/profile/safety.bsky.app/post/3layun7re5s2x its very tricky for any platform to manage and get right.Mastodon
Internal Server Error on Bluesky web service's Following feed feels very similar to error messages of early stage Twitter. Sudden growth of new users often causes growing pains to platforms.
You can't count all the sites on the open web or all the users on #ActivityPub servers because they are decentralized. Yet #bluesky is now displaying their number of users by the second as they race to 21m. They really are "special".
But every other corporate platform has that information too. It's how they sell themselves to VCs and advertisers. #SocialWeb
This other social network has made #Mastodon is such a enigma. And not talking about Twitter.
"Hoping Mastodon will get it's great migration too."
"Hoping Mastodon stays small / underdog."
...shouted simultaneously out of the same mouths.
Proud to make my home here but it's odd.. maybe some of this noise is performative? Reminds me of the Linux / Apple "wars" in '90s.
Actually it's mostly good talk about #Bluesky here. IMO over there relatively we're barely mentioned.
Moving on.
"Open social media offers a chance to escape the cycle of good product turns bad product and wiping the slate clean to start again. Instead, open social media offers the chance to build in a space where you can easily hop-skip-jump to the next best platform without losing your community."
Check out what @saskia had to say about Bluesky continuing to grow.

Even more Bluesky Growth
Bluesky is breaking ceiling after ceiling for open social media. It's getting a bit boring now isn't it? We've all heard about the success of Bluesky. I mean, even ITV News did a segment on it.Saskia (FORbetter)
