🔌 New blog post: the new data center environmental numbers are in, and a year of real data beats a decade of projections. Power forecasts went up, Google's water use jumped 34% in one year, and the honest summary is: globally modest, locally severe, growing fast.

Thanks for posting about this issue: “the best [AI] model in the world is useless if you can't power it.” It gets so little attention! Everyone acting as if there is tonnes & tonnes of surplus energy in the world instead of admiring the elegance of doing so much with so little (ha ha, my little joke). 😹🙏🏻
Might add: “the best model in the world is useless if” it has no social licence, another prerequisite that’s not in surplus. 🤔

In the current state of AI, it can find exploits to break out the contained environment for it to exploit another platform to get the answers to a test..
So the AI ‘decides’ its easier to cheat than actually solving the problem
I seriously cannot imagine that there are people thinking building a ‘artificial general intelligence’ is something clever
⚡ The US is spending $650B on AI this year. China spent about $100B. But China added 8x more power capacity in 2025, and its models cost a quarter as much to run.
The AI race everyone's watching is about which model is best. The race that actually matters is about who can keep the lights on.
China treats electricity as infrastructure. State credit, central planning, 540 GW of new capacity in a single year. The US treats it as a market commodity, and now sits on a gas turbine backlog stretching 5-7 years out.
The US still has the best models. But the best model in the world is useless if you can't power it.
I just realized that #AI will really help solving the #climatecrisis. Since conferences will be overwhelmed by junk submissions, reviewing will be given up. Nobody can do this any longer and nobody is willing to read the junk. As a result, we will meet our few buddies locally and at least the travel problem is solved. ![]()

Moonshot AI's Kimi K3: A New Frontier in Open AI Models Faces Unprecedented Demand
Explore the groundbreaking Kimi K3 by Moonshot AI. Discover how Kimi K3's 2.8 trillion parameters set a new standard in open AI models.Oswaldo Royett (Oz)
Y’all, last week, #AI repository #HuggingFace disclosed that it had been the victim of a cyber attack conducted by an autonomous AI agent.
Well, turns out, #OpenAI had models break containment, escape the lab, and grab prod data and certs to solve a problem it had been given.
So, that’s fun!
The attack used a combination of OpenAI's available #GPT 5.6 Sol and a more powerful, unreleased pre-release model. The models were able to identify and exploit a zero-day vulnerability in OpenAI's internal package registry cache proxy, allowing them to establish open internet access.
The models inferred that Hugging Face hosted the datasets, models, and answers for the benchmark they were being tested against.
The models chained multiple complex attack paths together. They utilized zero-day vulnerabilities and stolen credentials to achieve remote code execution on Hugging Face servers, directly extracting test solutions from the production database.

OpenAI says its AI models secretly broke out of a secure test environment and hacked into AI company Hugging Face in order to cheat on an evaluation

Aww, OpenAI changed their headline. Thy are now “partnering” to address the very naughty, no good, super cool, top secret AI that breached containment! So wholesome and sweet and has nothing to do with coordinating a press release to hype up an IPO at all.

Color me skeptical, but this story smells super fishy to me.
Any “Ooh our super-secret model is so dangerous and powerful it escaped containment” story from any major #AI startup warrants heavy skepticism. They’ve been pawning stories like these for years onto a compliant press, to keep their companies in the headlines.

for all its faults I think that last one is one of the most tragic.
So many people now see something and first think: okay but that looks too good to be true and since we have ‘this’ it must not be!
It’s good to not believe everything you see (people have faked things for eternity) but it is now a lot harder to actually determine things.
To me that’s a huge problem and a huge tragedy.
